Default OT: This made me feel good.

I think I've mentioned the LibraryThing.com website once before. I
spend a lot of my time there. Today there is an article about it in
the NYT's .

What really pleased me is who the reporter picked to feature in the
article, not some young recent college graduate, but an older women,
age 60. Doesn't she look wonderful in that photo?

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/03/04/bu...in&oref=slogin

That really made my day.

[another] Kathryn, a few years older, at 63.

She sure does. She looks younger than 60!

Is agism creeping into the media?

I'm curious, what makes you think so? Is it the color of her hair? Her
skin? The big smile?

Right now I am into watching women my age and trying to decide if they
are older or younger than me. If I get the opportunity to find out
makes it all the better.

The reason I am so interested is that a while back a stranger asked me
if I was Susan's (a co-worker) mother! (Ouch!) Susan is 50. I don't
think she looks particularly young, so I must look particularly old?
Hmm. I do have gray hair, so is that how strangers judge age? How
many wrinkles you have? I don't think I act old. I must not look that
old...my ex's new gf is older than I am and looks it. (VBG)

I think it's mainly her skin, but it's also helped by the vibrant
colour of her hair.

Creeping in? I'd thought it was entrenched.

Agreed. She just wasn't that wrinkly, and the hair color (fake as it
looks) clinched it. Funny thing about gray hair - how it automatically
puts you in a certain category, and also robs you of one distinguishing
trait, even if you aren't old yet.

I once had a friend old enough to by my mother and then some, and she
had the silver head to go with her age. We travelled a lot together and
she had a policy of wearing strong colors. Her favorite travelling
outfit was a bright blue-green. Once we ended up on a bus tour where the
majority of the group were a bunch of retired school teachers. I found
myself in a sea of gray hair and pastel clothes, not able to tell one
woman apart from another, and at that moment thought two things: Thank
goodness for my friend's bright green - and I'm wearing hot pink in my
old age!
