Ah, there are many, hard to pick one or even two - my criterion
is I could watch it over and over and still enjoy it. And I'm
probably leaving a bunch off.

In no particular order:

Inherit the Wind (Spenser Tracy)
To Kill a Mockingbird
The Caine Mutiny
Amadeus
The Shawshank Redemption
One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest
Joy Luck Club
Out of Africa
Mississippi Burning
In the Heat of the Night
Lilies of the Field
Secondhand Lions
Lion in Winter
Gandhi
The Great Escape
On Golden Pond
Charade
Prizzi's Honor
The Manchurian Candidate (Laurence Harvey version)
The Verdict
Parenthood
The Color Purple
Harry Potter 1 and 2
Driving Miss Daisy
Guess Who's Coming to Dinner
Steel Magnolias
Amadeus
Big
Forrest Gump
Philadephia
Philadelphia Story
The Birdcage
Little Women (Susan Sarandon)
Never Cry Wolf
The Godfather
A Few Good Men (despite Tom Cruise)
The Birdcage
Brighton Beach Memoirs
Fargo

I guess you like Sidney Poitier!

He just turned 81 the other day, believe it or not.

Funny thing, I always thought he was Haitian, but he was born in the
Bahamas.

Body Heat
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
Almost anything Hitchcock, especially North by Northwest
Bananas
Blazing Saddles
The Producers
The Twelve Chairs
Memento
There's Something About Mary
Safe
The Sweet Hereafter
and a lot of other less goofball, profound and serious films that don't
leap to mind, but I'm really not this shallow, Itellya...

My favorite movie of all time is Silent Running, with Bruce Dern
trying to save the last ark of Earth trees. I've never seen anything
else I can identify with so perfectly.

thanks for sharing those. haven't been a big film buff, but that
seems to be changing. i always like to hear about what movies people
really like or connect with. i've always liked odd & quirky things, &
have been enjoying old classics quite a bit lately. used to watch
alot of intensely serious stuff & now crave comedy.

it's interesting to me, as well, how certain actors/actresses either
draw us in or totally turn us off. i can't bear anything with tom
hanks or tom cruise for some reason.

any love/hate reactions to particular directors? i can't stand
quentin tarantino, but you may have noted that i am fond of errol
morris (ok - documentaries, but still)

i'll be seeking out some of your listed favorites.

What a thought provoking question. Ok, here goes (in no particular
order):

All the Harry Potter movies
Guess Who's Coming to Dinner
Lillies of the Field
The Haunting of Hill House (the original, not the remake)
All The Kings Men
12 Angry Men
Inherit The Wind
The Quiet Man
McClintock
The Secertary
Blazing Saddles
Young Frankenstein
Taming of the Shrew
Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolfe
Dracula (with Bella Lugosi)
The Whale Rider
Letters from Iwo Jima (the Japanese view of the battle of Iwo Jima)

There are more, but at the moment I'm having a "brain cramp".

Didn't know that - just that he was born somewhere in the Caribbean.

Speaking of brain cramps - I've been noticing a few that I forgot
- especially 12 Angry Men (original version).

Actually it turns out he was born in Miami. He was *raised* in the Bahamas.

I actually bought that on DVD for Christmas, and finally got to see the
movie again. It has held up well over the decades. It's still a good
story and it's still good acting.

I should have also added that all my favorite movies are the original
version, too.

One of the scariest movies I have listed is The Haunting of Hill House
(original version in B&W). There was no blood, no gore, no hideous
ghoulies, just the terror in your mind's eye. The remake was your
standard horror movie, with loads of special effects, and not worth
watching IMHO.

I remember the original scaring the crap out of me - and the remake
boring the pants off of me.
