| | | [OT] Trust I had an odd thing happen yesterday. I was buying a dozen items
in our local hardware store. One clerk was handing the items to
another to scan and ring up. They got interrupted by another
customer, and then had a brief, "didn't I already ring that up"
discussion, then noticed that some items didn't register and had
to go back and redo them. When the clerk at the register handed
me the charge slip to sign, I asked to see the register tape
first. Clearly put out, she huffily handed it to me, and then
said, "I'm sorry you don't trust me." I replied, "Gee, it's not
that I don't trust you, but there was so much confusion, and
anyone can make a mistake." That clearly did not mollify her.
I was surprised that she got upset that I wanted to check the
transaction, so much so that she commented on it. She's probably
older than I am (or may have spent a lot more time in the desert
sun), and I guess that comment sprung from a time or place where
people do trust each other and clerks in stores take pride in
their work.
It left me with a strange feeling.
Oh, and there were no errors.

I *always* check the register tape, but I usually do it *after* signing the
charge slip. If it's wrong it can be corrected by crediting my card. The
reason I don't check it before signing is that I live in New York City,
where killing someone for "holding up the line" is considered justifiable
homicide. (:^)

Eva,
Did you ever see Law and Order being filmed in NYC? I have always
wondered if Chris Noth is as nice looking in person as on TV.

During the early years of the original show, many of the episodes had
scenes shot in the neighborhood where I grew up. Union Theological
Seminary and Jewish Theological Seminary have both played police
stations and various other institutions. I'm glad the money for
location shooting went to some good causes. ;-) In one scene, the
characters are on top of Union and the bells from Riverside Church are
pealing in the background soundtrack. Took me right back, just as the
scenes shot on Columbia campus did, too.

Sorry, Dana....I don't live or work in *Manhattan*.
About 28 years ago I met Jerry Stiller (Ben Stiller's father in real life,
"George Costanza's father" on Seinfeld) for a few seconds, and that's about
the extent of my contact with TV stars.

That was a very bad thing for a sales associate to do. She should have
cheerfully and without comment agreed to let you see the register receipt.
And hey, it's not always the human that makes a mistake, sometimes the
scanners go wonky!
(Some POS (point-of-sale) software will not print an itemized receipt until
after the sale is rung, so if you have an issue with it, you have to wait
until it prints before you check it.)
In either case, a call to the store manager might be in order, if you feel
so inclined. |

No, I won't be doing that. I'll give her the benefit of the
doubt - maybe she was having a bad day, and she didn't make an
error on the total. I'm in the store about once or twice a
month, and I haven't had a problem with her in the past.
I really suspect that she, like many of us as we age, is having a
hard time accepting how things have changed in the past 50-odd
years. I find myself getting in more and more conversations
about how different things are now than when we were growing up,
with "different" translating as "bad" now. I recognize that some
of this has to do with my increasing inability/unwillingness to
embrace some of the changes around me (sorry, but I DO NOT think
that texting while driving is a good idea!). And some of it, of
course, is because those Millenials really are going to hell in a
handbasket! :-P

Dana:
Chris North is just as nice looking in person but shorter and
thinner than I had thought he would be. Saw him while he was filming
on the street in Brooklyn.. mJ | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
