| | | Prescribed Prometrium & Afriad To Take It Hey all,
I have PCOS and very heavy periods which is causing anemia. My uterine
lining is thickening too.
So my doctor said why don't we try Prometrium?
I had a hormone (spit test) 10 years ago which showed very low progesterone in my system, so I thought this may be good.
I am supposed to take it the 12th -25th day and first day was last
night. Only I could not bring myself to take it. I was scared after
reading the insert!
Due to fibromyalgia, I am sensitive to meds and if there is a side
effect, I get it, including the rare ones.

A former poster here had very good results from going low-carb. She had
severe PCOS that disappeared with eliminating all white starch from her
diet.
She still posts over at alt.support.diet.low-carb, if you want to go over
there and mention your PCOS.

I know it's scary to try new meds. I just had the experience this
morning to try something new for anxiety. I took it a couple of hours
ago and am already imagining that it's making me dizzy :-) The
body/mind connection is a trip, eh? You know, the way I see it, is,
worst comes to worst, you stop taking it if it causes problems. There
are two risks...it'll help or it won't. It might be worth the risk of
it helping, no?
Can you see a counselor to talk about this?

| | | Re: Prescribed Prometrium & Afriad To Take It I know nothing about PCOS. I'm perimenopausal, my uterine wall is
thickening, my periods are increasingly irregular, I occasionally bleed out
rather badly, and I'm prone to hormone-based mood swings.
I have been taking Prometrium daily for over a year. I am comfortable with
this based on my reading, because it appears that Prometrium may help
prevent the development of hyperplasia. It also appears to help stabilize
my mood. Some doctors prescribe for only part of the cycle to allow for
regular periods.
The only side effect I have noticed was that it seemed to help me sleep if I
took it at night, in the beginning. Like you, I am very prone to get
whatever side effect is listed on a package insert, and I frequently just
need a smaller dose than the typical dose of a medication, but have no
problem with Prometrium.
I see my doctor regularly.
Good luck!

| | | Re: Prescribed Prometrium & Afriad To Take It Most woman I know with PCOS are put on Metformin and a lower carb diet. I
know one that was on it for a year and a half and finally got pregnant..she
was so pleased. If you are leery about the new med call your Dr and ask more
questions. Have they mentioned fibroids? Allot of times thick uterine wall
and heavy bleeding may mean fibroids.

I took Prometrium for a month to reduce my flooding.I didn't do a thing for
me plus I was also scared of taking anything hormonal so I stopped it.The
one good thing that came out of it was the nice deep sleep, really
refreshing.I remember being told to take it at bedtime as it's sedating,
what an understatement, it was like taking a sleeping pill, 45 min after
taking it I could hardly keep the eyes open.
One thing I've found in peri is that I'm VERY sensitive when taking new meds
or supplements. The doses have to be low, at least half or less to start
then work upwards. My brain chemistry is really affected by new supplements
and dietary lapses, wheat, sugar and caffiene not only cause water retention
but contribute to mood swings.

| | | Re: Prescribed Prometrium & Afriad To Take It I am taking Prometrium days 11-24 of my cycle and have finally had 3 normal
periods. Yay!!!! The only side effect I have had is that it knocks me out.
With hope and heart,
Kathleen

| | | Re: Prescribed Prometrium & Afriad To Take It Thank you all for your replies, very helpful.
Edna, this sounds just like me, and the reason i am being put on it is
the very same reasons your taking it. Not so much for my PCOS but for
the problems you described.
I also have to take "baby doses" of medications as well.
I was wondering if the capsule that it comes in (looks like a gelcap)
can be divided into a smaller dose?

No, it can't. The big breakthrough of the Prometrium product was that
somebody figured out how to suspend the bioidentical hormone in peanut oil,
so what you're looking at is basically a gelatin cap full of peanut oil. If
you want a smaller dose, ask your doc. But I didn't need a smaller dose
than the 100 mgs I was given. I take it in the evenings, as I said, and the
only side effect was that it helped me sleep better for a while. That wore
off.
