| | | Segment on Today Show Anyone see the piece this morning on The Today Show? Matt Lauer talked to a
woman doctor specializing in menopause. She rigged him up to some kind of
warming bed used to treat hypothermia so that she could simulate hot flashes
for him. He said it was very uncomfortable and he does think now he has a
much better sense of what sufferers really go through/experience. I was
doing other things at the time and didn't catch a lot else. Anyone else see
it? Was there anything else worth mentioning?

Heh. A warming bed, eh? She only gave him a small taste of what it can
be like. Now if she'd hit him over the head with a mallet to simulate a
migraine, or tossed him into a vat of ice water to simulate a cold flash,
or...

Heh - that would be good. Of course, he'd prolly faint at the sight of

*that* is something that no man, no matter how understanding he
is or tries to be, can ever understand.
Nor, without an orifice of the right kind, can he ever know
what it's like to have *fluid* trickling constantly down and
out. To feel like you're constantly *peeing yourself*.

What's this about cold flashes? Is this something I can look forward
to at some stage of menopause? So far it's just HOT HOT HOT!
Sometimes it seems like I'm one of the major causes of global warming.

Heh - no kidding. There are times when I'm pretty sure I must glow.
Sometimes people have cold flashes instead of hot flashes, before or
after hot flashes, or alternating with hot flashes. There are also
panic/anxiety flashes and 'trippy' hot flashes that have reminded some
people of an acid trip.
Meno ain't for sissies.

They were news to me, too, but I did get them.

Maybe, maybe not.
So far it's just HOT HOT HOT!

I got cold flashes now & again for a while. Mine came in 2 varieties: 1)
exactly the opposite of hot flashes - short bursts of being very cold and
they alternated w/hot flashes, and 2) generally being chilly virtually all
day. (Which for me was weird, since I tend to run overly warm, if
anything.) I wasn't sick - they were cold flashes; I otherwise felt fine.

They came as a surprise to me, too. I think they're less
commonly experienced than hot flashes.

Maybe, maybe not. I got them post-hysterectomy, now and then for
about a year or two. I'd wake up at night shivering with teeth
chattering, and it would take several minutes for me to warm up.
I wasn't damp, I didn't have a fever, the room wasn't cold, and
I hadn't thrown off the covers. I'd guess this happened maybe a
dozen times.
So far it's just HOT HOT HOT!

Hot flashes at night, when I'm trying to sleep. During the day
when I'm trying to work, I'm shivering when all around me are
saying "warm in here, isn't it?"
