Default should I have gone through the menopause by now?

Hello

This is my first post to this group and I hope you can answer my very quick
and simple question:

I am 52 years old and will be 53 in August. I am still having regular
monthly periods which are heavy and can last anything from 5 to 10 days. Is
it normal for someone of my age to still be having regular periods? I am
noticing that if I see any sort of medical doctor I'm not even asked the
date of my last period. I'm sure this is because they think I'm too old to
be having one.

Your advice will be very much appreciated.

Thanks

Marika

"normal is a setting on a washing machine"

Don't worry - you're within the age range. 51 is just the *average* age
for menopause - that means some women will be younger, some older. Much
older - don't we have a regular here who was into her 60s and still not
finished with it all?

If you're worried about it, talk to your doctor - and he/she will
probably say "oh yes, you're older, but still normal". If they don't
ask the date of your period (why would they, unless it's pertinent to
the treatment they're about to administer?) and you think that they
should know, tell them "I'm still having periods, BTW - the last one was
(insert date)".

Thanks Jette. I don't know whether to be pleased or downhearted at the
prospect of still buying tampons at 60! I suppose, reading some of the
problems women have with the menopause, I should be thankful.

Thanks again

Hi. Yes, it's normal; annoying maybe, but normal. One of my friends is 56
& still getting periods - she's also in the heavy flow phase of the deal at
the moment. I hit menopause at 46; that's also normal. A little on the
early side, but within normal range.

BTW, I'm 57 & still occasionally get asked when the last date of my period
was at doctors' offices. I guess it *all* varies. ;-)

Just so you know, I had my period every 28 days till I was nearly 58.
I am nearly 59 now and *finally* winding down, 48 days between, then
70 days between, and hoping this time it is 90 or more -- maybe even
the end.

Various doctors ask when my last period was and I always love their
reaction when I say "last week" or "three weeks ago" and they quickly
look at their notes to see how old I am. But it's all normal.

Not to worry.
