my brain & body is still living in a talking heads' song (dunno -
maybe from 'stop making sense' - life during wartime/same as it ever
was), but we're no longer residing in a tom waits' song. we found an
awesome 1920s tudor home 2 blocks from the lake in a soon to be no
longer affluent neighborhood of one of detroit's inner ring suburbs.
actually, not too far from where we once lived, but world's away.
we've gone from the moose lodge & bowling balls to the yacht club &
ball gowns, with a clear understanding of where our actual
sensibilities lie. but it's all groovy. & quiet. & safer. though
not without obstacles - ie, higher heating costs, urban coyotes, &
republicans (little joke).
& trixie is forever magnificent: http://i273.photobucket.com/albums/j...2/EPSN6550.jpg
how are you guys doing? i see that cathy retired - so yay! & congrats
to her! what about everyone else? i'd love to hear some good things!
& i'll always be appreciative of all of your help & support when i
wandered through here in my confusion & misery. don't think i've ever
properly thanked everyone for that.

Wow! Talk about a 'tude! Believe it or not, there are far too many
people 'out there' who know a lot less than the usual posters in this
news group. Unfortunately those people 'out there' who know less are
the ones trying to make a fast buck on the disease of menopause. If you
want an eye opener of just how little we (the collective we of human
knowledge) know, check out a timeline done for International Menopause
Day. It may not open your eyes but it opened mine -- we (the collective
we of human knowledge) tend to think we know it all but that's what
everyone thought throughout history, and look at how wrong some of
those 'facts' were. For example, my grandmother was born into a time
when it was thought that the sperm held the egg ('do not spill the seed
upon the ground') while the womb was used *only* as a nesting place.
<http://www.seahare.net/Timelines/Timelines.html>
As for publishing books or hosting talk shows.... dearie, it's all
about who is most marketable, who will be able to make the most money
for the corporation behind the book or talk show. Follow the money.

Hey, that sounds wonderful, I hope the neighborhood bounces back soon.
My two long term unemployed Michigan friends both just got job offers.
I live in a 1020s tudor, too!

A 1920's Tudor - congrats! :-) I bet it has a lot of charm, HW floors, is
built well, etc. (My house was built in 1920, but it's a side-hall
colonial.) Am glad you're in a neighborhood in which you feel safer now,
too.

Thanks! :-) Waiting a few years past the time when I technically *could*
have retired (w/out any penalties re: my pension) was a good idea, in my
case. More sure that it was the right decision, & more of a pension.
what about everyone else? i'd love to hear some good things!

Still in peri, still not bothered by it (I swear my body makes stuff up
just so I can hang out here), and the acupuncture helped my impinged
shoulder (I do recommend!).
I now have acquired an extra day of vacation thanks to my age ("but I'm
not 50 YET!!!"). So I'm taking said day off tomorrow to think about
growing old. Heh.
I reacquainted myself with an old hobby last autumn, so I'm making
weather forecasts using astrology. Lots of fun! And it's been useful
this winter, with everything turned on its head for so many areas.
No pets. I find I like the freedom to take off for a weekend without
hassling for a pet sitter, but when I read Harry's stuff about
head-butting and purring, I do wish I had a fur critter of my own. I
make sure to give the neighbor's tuxedo cat some good scritches when I
see him. The cat, I mean, not the neighbor.

Absolutely beautiful. And such a sweet face.
> how are you guys doing?
Shoveling out of about 30" of snow here. Fortunately no power loss more
serious than a few flickers. DH and I recently discovered "Lost", so we
are using the snowed in time to make our way through the seasons. Peri
has yet to complete -- I'll go three to 6 months and wham. But the
symptoms are more manageable as long as my thyroid meds are correct, so I
can wait.
I'm about to turn 54, leaving my early 50s behind. :-)
Still surrounded by cats -- 5 at last count.
It was great to hear from you, even if it took a troll -- excuse me,
vastly superior woman whom we should all bow down to (perhaps I should
bring back my wicked, wicked women shrew crew persona?).
I love the Vespa.
Take care,

susan - it is pretty wonderful & we feel very fortunate (we still
wake up each day & say, 'i can't believe that we live here.'). the
truth is that we never would have been able to buy in this
neighborhood if things hadn't totally collapsed around here. when
time magazine started their year long story on detroit, they
referenced the grosse pointes as having handsome houses available at
prices most americans haven't seen in decades. & that is absolutely &
unbelievably true.
glad that your michigan friends were able to find jobs. so many folks
that we know have been out of work for long periods of time. it's
hard to know how to begin dig out & reconstruct over here.
very cool that you also live in a tudor from that era (thanks to you &
cathy, btw, for making me feel better about starting my post with 'my
brain & body *is*....') nice to be in good company. the place is
bigger than we need - about 2300 sq ft, but was the right deal/
choice. dh has been busy making interior storm windows for the old
casement windows (55 in all).
how has the last year gone for you?

Ours is all original except for the stupid vinyl replacement windows.
When we do the dormer with our new master bath, I want to replace them
all with brown ones with divided panes on top, the way they should be,
at least in front. And WOOD inside.

that's the place, though changing rapidly. if you were to drive the
lakefront where all the auto exec mansions sit, you would have your
pick of ones for sale. here's the reality. this awesome house,
walking distance to the lake & spectacular parks amidst tree-lined
streets & great architecture - we bought it for $156,000. & while
it's not cosmetically up to date, it's solid, with wonderful details.
ouch to the vinyl replacement windows - that's painful. i tried to
look around for windows - not only horribly expensive, but even the
better ones would have meant a significant loss of glass to frame
ratio, not to mention that we would lose the lovely wood on the
interior. good luck with your project.
aw, crap, to the rest. i was really hoping that after the sinus
surgery that you would be heading in some positive directions with the
rest. it sounded like you had at least one decent doc at the time.
if it helps, i still hate doctors as well. ((((hugs)))) |

hey, furpaw, i thought that you were supposed to be living the easy
life out there? you sound incredibly busy. do you like the admin
work? is online teaching more satisfying then up close & personal? &
lovely that you are still doing ceramics. i throw pots as well, just
not quite in that manner ;-).
my condolences re: your dear oppie. i looked back through the posts &
saw that it will be a year this spring - so sorry
but i am glad that you have found a beautiful furry companion - i
accessed the photos, but don't know anything about her personality.
has molly spiced up your life?
as to your question about 2-footed vs 4-footed coyotes: i'm used to
former but not the latter. they are actually preying on dogs & cats
in the neighborhood, so it's a problem. i came face to face with one
at detroit's island park a few weeks ago. i take trixie to run there
& am used to all sorts of urban problems, but never expected that
encounter, even given our neighborhood issues. but detroit is
reverting back to wildlife of the authentic sort.
lol about the 'republican neighbors can be ... interesting.' i relish
the fact that we are providing diversity to the street. but hey, i
don't think i'll turn down the spring wine cruise on the lake ;-)

Holy crap. You can't buy a small empty lot here for that, I don't
think. WOW again. Good deal for you!

I have to get the plans done, but have been so busy case managing MIL's
life and trying to deal with feeling awful all the time that I have
gotten stuck. I'd have wanted new windows, I'm sure, just not these,
that's for sure. but I don't think it'll be a huge expense on balance.
These were cheap and some of the seals are already blown, too.

I turned out to have a 43 y.o. gum/jaw infection, too. Tarnished, tarry
gunk in one sinus, a granuloma from a root canal when I was 13,
accidentally discovered recently. I seem to have sinus/jaw/bone
infection since its removal and no seems to be able to believe or see
it. I was sent to an ahole dental pathologist for samples, but he used
his x ray vision from across the room to assess me and tell me it's just
in my head, the other way.
So I'm stuck. My wonderful dentist had another patient with a similar
experience with him who saw a good pathologist in CT, so I may head
there. Can't rely on my Cushing's results, nor try for treatment until
I stop having infections/inflammations stimulating excess cortisol
release and burning through it due to systemic stress.
I really DO hate everybody. Except when I don't.

keera,
well hurray to the not bothered by peri! you go, girl! sure you
don't want to trade for a bit? if i recall, you are younger than i
am...
glad to know that you have found impingement relief with acupuncture.
i've never tried it, but i've heard more than a few people report
favorably about it.
lol about taking that extra day of vacation off to think about growing
old!
so. weather forecasts using astrology? sounds intriguing. fun &
complicated? i wonder if we could do peri/hormonal forecasts that
way. lord knows i could use some advance warnings.
sometimes neighborhood pets are the best way to go - all the fun with
none of the hassle. this little golden here does wear me out. keep
up the good scritches, appropriately placed, of course ;-)

symptoms. i hope that the thyroid management has been going ok. it
took a while for my dh to find the right dose of meds. does it wig
out worse for women because of all of the other hormonal turmoil?

susan! f*ck!!!!!! & really what i want to do is keep exclaiming that
after hearing that about the decades old & ongoing infection(s)! when
i think of how hard it was for you to uncover this - & now to deal
with more idiots - i can so totally see the across the room xray
jack*ss. so sorry :-( i'm glad that you have a good dentist & i hope
that you can find a good pathologist.
crap! how hard to be worn down by feeling crappy & fighting to get
good care, not to mention dealing with family stuff. totally
understand the HATE people.... even when it's not always...
so i take it you are designing the renovating plans yourself? i hope
there is some fun in that, at least.
re: the housing prices here - you wouldn't believe the gorgeous homes
that we could have gotten for around $100,000. the kind with
fireplaces in the master bedrooms, etc. we just never would have been
able to afford the taxes on something assessed at $450,000. of
course, we sit on our 3 other city properties, all now worth nothing.
at least my brother is living in our old house (so big sister is
assured that he has a roof over his head), & we have a good renter in
the one & are trying to get some artists into the commercial prop.
just hoping that the grosse pointes don't totally tank.
((((hugs)))) |

here's a shot of the house (can't believe we haven't taken many) http://i273.photobucket.com/albums/j...r/EPSN6014.jpg
i use the term tudor loosely. i don't really know how well this
fits. we do have the chimney pots & other distinctions. but whatever
it is - lots of light & lots of fun. |

Next will be brain cancer: I've had 6 or 7 C-T scans to my head in the
last decade, most in the past five years. My dentist actually requested
and got a copy of my C-T from the oral surgeon and my sinus films from
my ENT to ask a friend's brother whose a radiology resident to see if he
can find anything.

Oh, no, we need an architect or draftsperson. I know what I want to do
in the bathroom, though. I only contacted design and build firms.
We're not adding hardly any floor space, just a few feet in the bath,
but by raising the steeply pitched roof line over this room and my bath,
we'll be able to use a LOT more of the space we have. Our BR is fine,
not steeply sloped. We plan a tudor style dormer, perpendicular ridge.

Amazing value. I hope the rebound hits your area and your value goes
sky high.

Those properties may come back. Grosse Pointe sill have the best
schools, or are they struggling with funding now?

It's gorgeous, cream stucco, brick and tudor brown trim, same as mine,
but bigger.
