Yep, I would call it a Tudor, too. Lovely house! - & you're right, it's
big! Looks like the rooms are good-sized with lots of light - exposre to
the sun virtually no matter where it is. Big front porch, too. Great price
for it! I love the front door surround & the triple windows - esp. the one
above the front door. Is that a part of the upstairs hall, or is a room
there? Or possibly an offshoot from the front bedroom, maybe??

Thanks, but nope! I've had the floors refinished once - the
upstairs/bedrooms right before I moved in (very late '86), & the downstairs
several years later. Back then, after rdg. up on it, I decided to let a
professional do it vs. trying to handle a sander & possibly messing up with
it - as in taking too much off any given portions of the floors!

Perhaps. Peri appears to be a common time for thyroid issues to make
themselves known. The first dose the doctor put me on did the trick for a
year, then the symptoms returned. My tests were still normal, but given
that I had been having symptoms for about 5 years before the tests
registered anything, the doctor went ahead and upped my dose about two
years ago and that has worked ever since.

We got Tiffy (already named) in October 2008. After a month of hiding she
turned into a delightful cat. Every morning she bounds onto the bed and
settles down on top of me for her morning cuddles. Motorboat purr. It is
a lovely way to start the day.
> how is the family doing?
DH's long-awaited promotion has finally made it through most of the hoops
and should be effective soon. Autistic daughter is happy in supported
employment, and continues to improve her excellent swimming skills. She
was supposed to be tested for pre-lifeguard skills last week, but the
snow took care of that. YD is in her junior year of college, happy with a
perfect internship, and doing very well. DS is doing contract work that
he enjoys -- he's been in the same place for a couple of years now.

What's interesting to me is the tiny upswing at the edge of the roof
above the entrance. _That_ is a characteristic of old Bergen homes, ca.
17th century.

Yes, well, I guess it's the price to pay for being in peri for 10 years.
Oh, hey, everybody want to go out and celebrate my "anniversary"? Calls
for a drink or three, don't you think? ;-)
Drinks. The one effect peri is having on me is that my body no longer
likes wine. Seriously. My taste buds find wine bitter-tasting now,
especially whites. (Bummer.) However, beer always agrees with me.

That was why I tried it. One co-worker had a lot of problems with his
shoulders and neck, including needing surgery. When it all flared up
again, he tried acupuncture. I also had PT, and I think the combo is
probably optimal, but it was the needles that removed the pain. And I
have an excellent acupuncturist, which helps.

first.

Oh, my, the human hormone system vs. weather? I'll take weather, thank
you! :-) All the work comes from all the charts in a season. Seasonal
forecasts are based on the equinoxes and solstices. Add to that the
movement of Mercury (for winds) and lunar phases (for moisture); the
equinox/solstice chart shows temperature and overall weather. I work
with about 18 charts min. per season.
My stuff is published in Norwegian, but the links at my weather forecast
blogs are to astrological forecasters in English-speaking parts of the
world, in case any of you want to know the weather weeks in advance. :-) http://icweather.blogspot.com/
My teacher's website is weathersage.com and she offers an overview for
the US and links of her own.

Yikes! My tiny 2 bedroom house with disgusting paneled walls in too
many rooms and horrible wall-to-wall downstairs, on a small dead-end
street behind a public housing project in a working class neighborhood
of Boston has recently dropped a little in estimated price, although
it's still hovering around 280K. I bought it in 1998 for $119,500.
What a difference a location makes!

This reminded me (a little belatedly) of something from 2 summers ago that
was pretty cool.
From my front hall (screen/storm door closed, reg. front door open) one day
I saw a couple of women - in their 30's - out on the public sidewalk in
front of my house. They were facing the house, appeared to be in
conversation, & were looking quite benign - they saw me & sort of waved; but
I had no clue who they were. The sidewalk's a good 50' from the front door,
so I went out to them, & it turned out they were the granddaughters of the
couple (who IIRC, were the 3rd owners since 1920) who lived here from the
early 1940's - the mid-80's. They live out of town in different locales but
were visiting their parents (their father grew up in this house) - who live
less then half a mile down the street.
Now, this house has cedar shakes for its siding, which is painted white.
The classic sort of white house with dark green shutters kind of Colonial
Revival house that I had wanted for years & got at an excellent price in '86
($50K) which I could actually afford (I was making about $25K/yr. then)
because it needed all new cosmetic help/paint inside & out. (Should be
*stained* white, but that's a whole 'nother story. The paint - vs. white
stain - was already there when I moved in, so I'm stuck with it.) In the
front, esp. around the entrance, the shakes aren't in great condition -
prob. due to overzealous power washing in the past. Various friends have
asked how come I don't just put vinyl siding on it, instead of dealing with
the not-so-hot areas of shakes & painting it every 'x' number of years, but
I really want to keep the natural materials. (If I were rich, I'd just have
redone one or two sides of the house in new shakes already!) Anyway, this
is all leading up to: None of the siding issues were being discussed
between us, but one of the things the women/granddaughters said to me was:
"We are *so* glad you haven't put vinyl siding on the house!" ;-) Which
made me feel worthy of the house. :-) (See, all of that -was- going
someplace, after all! <g>)

ah, geez, susan! wish i could do more then send cyber (((hugs))) &
good wishes. obviously i hope that everything shows clear with that.
i just wish that something was easier - anything- with this whole
ordeal/process. just makes me want to swear on your behalf.
may the renovation go well. i don't think that i'll ever be able to
convince my dh to hire anyone ever again for anything. we had very
bad luck with some of the contractors that we recently hired. just
horrid work. even with glowing referrals.
i don't know what will happen in michigan. the grosse pointe schools
are still very solid - we are taxed quite high & there is high
community commitment to the school system. in the meantime, detroit
continues to sink at a horrifying & rapid pace.

the triple windows over the front door are part of the main
staircase. here's one photo: http://i273.photobucket.com/albums/j...r/EPSN5967.jpg
there is a ton of light & we love it. the prior owners removed a wall
between the kitchen & dining room & that really opened up the whole
back of the house (we have a small enclosed porch off the back as
well). there are 3 bedrooms on the second floor. & then converted
rooms on the 3rd level as well. way more toilets than i need....
you are quite smart with the wood floors. dh spent a ton of time on
ours & they came out great. but what hard work. & trixie is sanding
them down again.

interesting observation on the house - i'll have to look that up. i
really don't know much at all about such things.
for sure i'll drink with you! i'm around the 10 yr mark as well. &
if drinking is not well tolerated, how would chocolate do?
so have the forecasts been generally accurate? maybe if we combine
weather & hormones.... wonder what we would get. full moons sure
don't agree with me. & that was a splendid one that we recently had.

difference in location is right. we are comforting ourselves with the
house & neighborhood even while life falls apart all around this
area. boston vs detroit is no contest.
yours may not be the ideal dream home, but i'm glad that you haven't
lost value. & i hope that life is going well for you. it's great to
catch up with everyone here - i've missed you all.

that is so totally cool from all aspects, cathy! the house sounds

I would never put vinyl on a house, but I am definitely planning to use
Hardy board (fiber cement) for the clapboard on the dormer, to match the
clapboard atop our front peak. Looks like the real thing. We would've
used the Hardy perfection shakes on our old house if we hadn't moved.
Also, you never want to power wash a house; too easy to end up with a
mold problem by water intrusion under and into siding. Better to use a
spray on like Jomax or Wet and Forget.

i won't even say what $500k would buy you here. definitely get a
kitchen. or 2.
it's great that values are holding there, even in this market. a
wonderful house is worth nothing if the neighborhood falls apart & the
quality of life suffers. i'm not sure of the drop in value here, but
i bet it's close to 50%. i do know that the last mortgage on this
house was for $350k.
i never understood those strange spending decisions - huge amounts of
money in some areas & 'cheesing' in others. the bathroom sounds
somewhat challenged/challenging, but it's great that you have so much
of the original fixtures & other items. we do have the original knobs
& other hardware but most of the lighting is sadly atrocious. |

This particular part of this town holds values in any market, but not
all of LI does. I think at worst we've been down 10% total. But a LOT
of house sales have closed in the past few months and comps are
surprisingly high. Has to be old and charming, though. Anything built
after the 30s or 40s goes for a very steep discount.

Lighting fixtures here are nothing special, and I could sure use more
outlets on more walls for plugs and hard wired lights. Something to add
when we do the remodel.

Pretty OK! No major life events but as all 4 of my and
DH's parents get older (they're all between 82 and 88)
things get harder. Still, no major life events. The only
major life event i want is a house of our own, but that's

I passed my one-year/no period mark a couple weeks ago,

i'm all for pretty OK! & yay! for the official entrance into
meno!!!! congrats!!!!! does it feel celebratory, in spite of
still having symptoms? have you experienced the fabled meno-zest? or
is that mere legend?
at any rate, i hope that the symptoms lessen the further you go
without periods.
but 4 parents in their 80s sounds like it could be a handful. dh's
parents are in their early 80s & just starting to need help (& his
father has a significant health problem that will just worsen & will
require intensive caregiving.) it's one of the reasons we remained
here in the state. your reference to home - so are you sharing it
with some of the family, then? |

I think so, for the few decades I've known the village, my part of town.
Not only that, but when we bought here during the real estate boom in
2004, houses here had tripled in value in 11 years, and where we moved
from had doubled in 16 years, so quite a diff.
Any realtor will tell you that everyone wants "old and charming."

If your weather were milder, those prices and having you for a neighbor
would put a for sale sign on my lawn this week. ;-)

yow! tripled in value! tough to buy during a boom, but good to know
that it's all stable & will continue to be so. since we are detroit's
neighbor, it's hard to tell what will happen here. we hope we don't
totally tank, but who knows? even the one close & distinguished
detroit neighborhood is collapsing, with many of the homeowners there
making their move into the pointes.

I think i'll be more inclined to celebrate when the symptoms
also fade - but then, i was lucky in having few period problems
just more pms annoyance. And i'm not entirely glad to exit
childbearing -- I'd like to have have skipped my first marriage
and to have borne kids. But i'm also aware that my actual ability
to carry a child to term undoubtedly ended quite awhile before
age 55 (my last period was a week after my 55th birthday
last year), so it's not a major thing. Regrets are a waste. My life
is too good for me to complain much about and i'm a very lucky
and valued stepmother.

So far, no, but does it allegedly happen right away?

DH and i live in my parents' guest house, actually, pretty
much to act as their assisted living - it's a good setup for all
concerned! Yeah, they're all a handful, but all mobile and
mentally OK for now! Blesséd, we are!

well, i understand the whole coming to terms with exiting the
childbearing years. i was thinking about that yesterday as trixie & i
were playing with the children next door.
there are things i wish would/could have been different. but i am
with you as well with not spending time with regrets. & looking to
the good things inherent in our lives.
as far as meno-zest, if it does exist, i'm sure it doesn't happen
right away. but i do hope it's out there. some days i think i know
what it is. but this has been one slow transition... glad you are
stepping closer each day.
the current home arrangement does sound like a good set-up for
everyone. i'm sure i'll have some real estate suggestions when it
comes time for your detroit retirement dream ;o)
