| | | Update: my doctor's appointment Last Monday I wrote about some issues I've been having. Today I saw my
ob/gyn. He says he really, REALLY thinks I need to have the hysterectomy.
Now, you have to understand, one of the things I like about him is that he
really believes in the motto "It is your body, and your decision", so he has
always laid out the options, and hasn't tried to pressure me in any way,
even though he's been recommending a hysterectomy for about three or four
years now. But, he pointed out that we've really been down the road of
conservative treatments for a long time -- a D&C, an endometrial ablation,
hormonal tx -- and nothing is working... and it is getting worse. Now it
has gone long past the point of merely being an inconvience; it is a more
global health issue.
So, we talked more about the hysterectomy. Basically, he told me like he
did before -- he didn't think he could do a vaginal or even a LAVH. He says
(1) my pelvic floor is very firm, so my cervix is very high (2) my cervix is
also tilted, making it awkward and (3) I have a very narrow vaginal canal.
All together it means that it is hard to manuveur. However, he pointed out
that there were surgeons in our area who specialize in just this, and that
because they do it two or three times a day, they get *really* good at it.
He said I should get a consult. He thinks that there is a pretty good
chance that even they say it can't be done, but... it is worth a try.
He would recommend keeping the ovaries. We know that small changes in my
hormonal treatments have had HUGE effects, and he thinks a surgical
menopause would be very difficult for me.
So, I see the new guys in two weeks. I'll see what they say.

Look into a uterine artery embolization. I had that done, and have been
extremely happy with the result. Google it before you go, if you like.
It's done by a radiologist, and recovery time is much shorter than for a
hyst.

I'd have to agree. I'd have noticed if she had mentioned the embolization. I
had one back in June. An ablation alone is not going to take care of the
fibroids. I'm surprised the obgyn isn't addressing the fibroid issue.

Eva, I see others have already mentioned I had an ablation (and yes, I've
made that same "writing before the caffeine infusion mistake" before!).
To everyone: my doctor and I did discuss the UAE. He said that, of course,
I could try that route, but, he didn't think it would work for me, because
having fibroids is only one of my issues. I have polyps and chronic
endometritis, as well.
He and I have been trying to work through this for seven years now. I've
had surgical interventions and we've tried numerous medical interventions.
He is definitely not the "well, why don't we go in and yank it all out" kind
of doctor. He's been very conservative. But, it has just gotten worse and
worse, and now I almost feel like we have entered a whole new level of
problems. I'm now on day thirteen of bleeding, a bleeding that started
about 10 days after the end of my last period. I feel like hell. I am
soooo weak. I keep taking the iron (which causes me GI problems) but it
doesn't seem to be enough.
I think I am at the place, after all these years, that I just want it to be
over. My ob/gyn says he'd recommend keeping the ovaries, even though I may
still have to be on the Pill for the ovarian cysts, because we both know
that I am *very* sensitive to even slight hormonal changes, and a surgical
menopause would probably throw me for a loop. So, I'd do that. But,
really, I"m tired of the fight.

My sister swears by an iron product called Floradix, which she says
doesn't cause GI upset but does do wonders for your iron. (No

See how much you have learned much already? :-) I found that a lot of the
stuff I had been attributing to weird, isolated symptoms is actually
divided between meno and hypothyroid. One has been treated; still waiting
for meno to complete.

Hi Emma Anne and Sheila...it's LaMer. I've been mostly lurking and
sometimes posting here with this other name. This is a lovely group.
A different flavor from ASM. Less grammatical correcting and more on
topic. Great place to whine. And they don't put up with spam LOL.
Regarding the hypo thing....yes, that put me into meno and it will be
about two more months of no periods before I can call myself
officially into menopause. Sheila, my periods sounded like yours so
I very much relate to the frustration. It sounds like you've educated
yourself well and your doctor certainly sounds reasonable. Have you
consulted with other docs as well?
Gosh ain't it nice to be a woman????
BTW....to all in this group, I just went through my first annual
cancer follow up and got a clean bill of health. No signs of cancer
this year. No signs of periods either. Can't ask for much more than
that. Well, maybe a few things :0) I had to go off of synthroid for
5 weeks and had my whole body scan on Monday and was told I was clean,
go home and have been back on meds for 4 days now. It'll take a while
to get back to normal. But what the hell is normal now????? I hope
you've all been well and it's nice to have this cloud lifted. |

With a few exceptions, most teabag tea is the leavings after the best
leaves have been picked out. Just about any loose tea will be an
improvement, and a really good loose tea will be a major improvement.
I really like the British Chatsford teapot for loose teas. The extremely
fine mesh of the infuser basket makes it easy to brew tea without any
loose bits left in the tea, and the lack of metal keeps my green teas
from developing an off taste.

Wow. Seems a little pricey to me.
Since we're referencing tea sites, may I offer my favorite? http://www.uptontea.com It's right near Boston, so I get second day
delivery with the standard $3.95 cost. I've got four breakfast blend
tins of 125gms going right now, plus about the same number of afternoon
teas, plus a bunch of samples.

That is where I get my tea. Mine arrives pretty quickly, though not
necessarily on the second day -- maybe the third. I highly recommend the
Japanese Ho-ji Cha, and the Jasmine Dragon Phoenix Pearl. Small qualities
of that one, it is pricey, even if you can get three brews out of each
teaspoon. That is also where I got my Chatsford pot -- I think they are
the only US supplier who carries them.

I like buying sample sizes of the really expensive stuff and having a
few cups that are nectar of the gods. :-)
I had a cup the other week that tasted like all outdoors -- all leafy
and wonderful. I think I'll have another cup of that one this
weekend... if I can remember which it was!

My family avoids me when I am sipping a cup that is so good I'm moaning
with pleasure. :-)

Let me know if you remember. I'll be placing an order in the near future
-- as soon as Chris is able to remember the one that had such a dramatic
effect on ADD. :-) DH is ready and willing to try it.

When I feel like a good British tea...Lady Grey by Twining is good...it
also makes a great Iced Tea. I also like Earl Grey ..and Breakfast tea .

OK, here are the two samples I've tried and really liked:
TD26 -- Season's Pick Darjeeling -- Risheehat SFTGFOP1 -- That's the one
that tastes leafy to me.
TC62 -- Wewelkandura Estate -- Ceylon FBOPF EX. SPL. -- That one's rich
and reminds me of the smell of my father's best pipe tobacco.
Neither of them are unapproachably expensive, but they're out of my
normal range. I have a cup every morning and one every afternoon, so I
can go through tea at a good clip.

Thanks! Those prices are in line with my favorite Japanese Ho-ji Cha.
That one is light enough that 1/2 pound takes up the same volume as one
pound of most teas. I have two cups of green tea in the morning, and two
of rooibos in the evening, but my tea habit is still less expensive than
DH's coffee habit. While the coffee is less per pound, it takes at least
six times as much coffee to make a cup as it does tea.
