Default who did you swoon for?

who did you have a preteen or adolescent crush on? someone from the
pages of tigerbeat? a cool rocker? corky the boatboy? i confess to a
preteen donny osmond obsession & my elementary school yard poll of
whether donny or david cassidy was better wasn't a valid indicator for
hotness but was reliable for predicting my later stint in survey
research.

tom jones: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=boyCb...eature=related

did you ever throw underwear at any point in your life? just curious.

Leonard Whiting, after watching Romeo and Juliet 8 or 9 times. Once I
stayed in the theater and watched it three times in a row.

Oh, my! He was about 18 when Herman's Hermits took off. I've got to check
Amazon and add some CDs to my wish list.

It was a bit of a shock to see him a while back as a bad guy in Quantum Leap.

Throwing underwear is absolutely unimaginable to me. However, through my
interest in old R&B I found out that Tom Jones' fans did not invent this
practice. Sonny Til, lead singer of The Orioles, was the first person I've
heard of to have underwear flung at him while performing, starting in the
late 1940s. I have just wasted 1/2 hour trying to find performance video of
this group on YouTube, but in vain. "Orioles" turns up nothing but
baseball. Sorry.

Ahhh, the huge pic of Peter Noone's face on the back of "The best of
Herman's Hermits" album... I then thought he was about the cutest thing
there was. Fast-forward ~30 years when I next saw a photo (or video clip?)
of him... he hadn't aged all that well... was a big disappointment. ;-)

I was big into Simon & Garfunkel in HS, & although PS has nice brown eyes &
AG was tall (or at least taller <g>) & rangy, they didn't create
heart-throbs really - more of a huge admiration. Went to a concert of
theirs in '68. One didn't throw things, panties or otherwise. ;-) I
remember one person (idiot) in the audience yelled out for "Mony, Mony",
which was big on the charts at the time. One of them simply replied, "We
don't do Mony, Mony." And went into their next song.

Famous people? for a brief time in HS, Ringo and Paul. I also
remember intense discussions at the school lunch table trying to

Kildare. We didn't have a TV at the time, so I was not enamored

At a concert? No, I was much too repressed!

I never threw my underwear, but Tom had instructions, if I died, to
sprinkle my ashes onto JFK jr. :-/ That's the lustiest crush I've
ever had in my life.

Early on, because I'm so shallow, I loved Paul because he was cutest,
and a few years later, completely got what sexuality was when I saw that
curly headed head shot of Jim Morrison.

Even so, always had too much dignity to throw my underwear. ;-)

I am unhappy that The Dave Clark Five have been inducted into the Rock &

I think Paul Simon is hot, but I've always had a weakness for short Jewish
guys.

You know what I've just discovered by him (only 17 years after he recorded
it)? This song called "Thelma." I can't make heads or tails out of the
words, but what a great song! Hypnotic percussion there.

The Zombies are so totally underrated!
I have a soft spot for pasty British guys like Ray Davies, Jeff Lynne,
Robert Plant, Peter Gabriel, Nick Lowe, Robyn Hitchcock...

I don't even remember Ben Casey - name rings a bell, but that's it, but
thought Dr. Kildare was on the cute side, & did have a side-buttoning "Dr.
Kildare" blouse. Then, thinking about it... later really liked him in
"Shogun", & thought he was very sexy as the priest in "The Thorn Birds".

Me, too - even if others had been doing it. But have never been to a
concert where it was the thing to do, so... I think I'd have to be 3 (or 4,
or even 5) sheets to the wind to get up the nerve to do something like that.
;-)

Other than pure enjoyment of the music, my best in-concert moment was while
up & dancing to "That Was Your Mother" (a zydeco-based song) at a Paul Simon
concert several years ago, when he got to the line of "...catch a little bit
of those Cajun girls dancing to zydeco", he pointed to me. :-) My
second-best was while waiting for a concert to begin at the Beacon theater
in NYC, meeting & talking w/ Paul's brother Eddie (his brother's
co-manager); very nice guy - pleasant, easy conversation.

;-)

I did like his late 80's-early 90's stage, esp. Have a poster from the
Gracleand tour - in a "jacket & jeans" - with the juju doll on his guitar
strap, & one of the 1964/1993 boxed set cover. And the cover shot for the
2000 "You're the One" album *is* a sexy image - has a certain "je nes sais
quoi". And going back farther... the 'parka' pic on the back of thre "Paul
Simon" album LP - very cute. Have to admit he has (or at least had, when
younger <g>) nice facial bone structure, & a cute lopsided smile, too.
OTOH, his mustache stage way back when (must've been in the 70's) ... ugh!
;-) But going back to HS - I don't think I saw the sex appeal so much
then.

> You know what I've just discovered by him (only 17 years after he recorded
> it)? This song called "Thelma."

Yeah - not a surprise there. I do have it on a CD, but can't remember
*which* one. It's a rarity & difficult to find; as is "Ten Years" - which
AFAIK, is only on the "Carnival" CD - the rainforest benefit album put
together by a bunch of various artists.

> I can't make heads or tails out of the
> words, but what a great song! Hypnotic percussion there.

IMO, "Thelma" is a wonderful & very pretty song, both musically &
lyrics-wise. But I personally think that it could use a re-mix: the vocal
needs to be beefed up a little over the music track - that the latter drowns
out the words a little too much.

It was written after the birth of his first child with Edie Brickell.
(Thank goodness he finally seems to have a marriage that's really working.)
The lyrics say how much he adored & wanted Edie (aka "Thelma"); but he was
afraid that - besides the large age difference - others, knowing of his past
failed romances, would scare her off from him. But he wins her love. Then
goes on to the birth of the baby, & how everything -compared with watching
her & the new baby asleep in the hospital room, pales in comparison. (For
others, wondering, here's an audio clip:
http://www.amazon.com/Thelma-Outtake/dp/B001223D90 )

Here are the lyrics, as far as I can find them & know them:

"If a feeling's born and no one complains
Well that's good luck
running through young veins.
And if life is a blessing
that brushes the tops of the trees,
Well it's a short walk
in a sweet breeze.

I will need you, feed you, seed you, plead with you
All for the taste of your sweet love, Thelma.
If a heart is an open memory book
That was the chance I took
The more I searched, the more I shook with Thelma.
Last night I slept on a rented pillow
A silver moon above my head
A thirsty dreamless sleep released me
And I reached for the phone
by the side of the bed.

Now the first time that I saw you I thought
"She's beautiful, but she's too young to be caught."
People aware of my history
Trying to steer you away from me
I left a message at your hotel
Don't let management poison the well.

I will need you, feed you, seed you, plead with you
All for the taste of your sweet love Thelma.

The phone is ringing and I realize
we are time zones and oceans apart
The words I speak in the middle of my night
They fall on your yesterday scars.

If the sun don't shine, the wind don't break
the clock don't jump off the wall
Thelma, my darling, I will cushion your fall
I will need you, feed you, seed you, plead with you
Without the taste of your sweet love Thelma.

I am only a man who has skirted the edge of despair
for a long time now, and I don't care.

I watch you sleeping in the hospital bed
The baby curled up in a ball
Winter sunlight hits the family tree
And everything else becomes nothing at all."

I got it when i watched Vanessa Redgrave wash Richard Harris's
back in an early scene in _Camelot_. Real hormonal wake-up,
that one! I totally never got the attraction of the whole Lancelot
thing. Give me Richard Harris any day.

Can't find the Camelot bathtub scene - here's the goodbye.

I'm sure you will come up with something!

Dana agrees JFK Jr was pretty hot. Lots more than his dad!

Robert Plant is even sexier now, IMO, than he was in Led Zeppelins heyday. I
love the grizzled bearded mature look. My brother went to the Zep show in
London last month and posted some film on his website. Plant is not hitting
the high notes like he used to, but he's still got it.
Have you heard his new CD with Allison Krauss? Awesome!

:-) I always had my crushes on the class brain, so when I met one who is
also short and Jewish, what was I to do? Still hot for him after 23+
years together...

He is? Oh, well, I still think he was cute as Dr. Kildare.

How many women (mostly of an earlier generation) felt cheated
when they found out that Rock Hudson was gay?

Never suffered a pre-teen crush on any singer, but actors/characters
in tele-fantasy shows, yeah. Remember the show "Captain Scarlett"? I
had such a crush on the character "Captain Blue" (ok, he was a puppet
- but it was the voice that had me hooked)

And this guy

(still got a bit of a crush on Michael - but these days I actually
know him as a person too <g>)

His _character_ wasn't - and that's what matters. <g> We don't
actually know the actors, it's the characters they portray we fall in
love with.

yow - i would have never imagined such reticence :-)

that's an incredible array of attractions. & nary a corky in the
bunch. i am looking forward to the asm hotties calendar & am thinking
that perhaps karen may need to post a photo of her husband...

maybe my 10 yr old self's affection for donny was only puppy love.
i'm not sure what prompted me to ask the swoon question, but i hope
that it wasn't indian superman (who apparently is also indian elvis,
indian john travolta, etc:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GfZYv09OkdI
really - very painful, go about 1:17 into it & watch maybe 30 seconds
or less to get the idea)

well, off to practice my underwear flinging.

Dignity?

Half the time, when I was going to concerts in my youth, I didn't even
have underwear.

uh oh, before i jump to conclusions about where this discussion thread
may end up, shall i assume that the lack of undies was due to
financial hardship?
