You know, I thought about posting that link here when I first came
across it, then I wondered just how much non-Finns/non-Europeans would
understand of some of the references, couldn't make up my mind if it
mattered - and, well, didn't. Post the link, I mean.
So, were there any references any of you (esp. American) didn't get?

I think I got most of them, or could figure them out from
context. Which ones were you thinking might be too local?
You Tube also as a Birmingham Complaints Choir video - still
needs work, but maybe the idea is spreading?

These (the public sauna thing I think is self-explanatory if you've been
in a sauna):
Eurovision: "We always lose to Sweden in hockey and Eurovision." Norway
could claim the same thing. Do non-Europeans know what the Eurovision
Song Contest is? (And the neighborly "inside fight" between the
Scandinavian countries?)
"People only take a stand in SMS-forums." We have SMS-forums in Norway,
usually running across your TV-screen next to music videos all night
long. Is that common in the States, too? (SMS = text messaging, in case
anyone was wondering.)
TV licence inspector: "Evenings wasted hiding from the TV licence
inspector." A familiar "hobby" in Norway, too, where you have to pay the
licence just to own a TV set, so it doesn't matter if you never watch
the channel that actually gets the license money. Recently, in Sweden,
two politicians resigned when it was discovered they hadn't paid their
TV license (<http://www.theregister.co.uk/2006/10/16/tv_sweden/>) and
suddenly Swedish television was well in the black because there was a
rush to pay from Swedes hiding out from the TV license inspector. Do
Americans know what a TV license is (or all the "fun" we get from having
one)?

Like the UK TV license? - our money goes to pay for the BBC.

We don't have a TV license. Free television might very well be
guaranteed by our Constitution. Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of
Entertainment Via a Box in Our Living Room, Bed Room, and Probably the
Kitchen. If I did have such a thing as a television license, I would
demand better reception than I get from my bent-out-of-shape rabbit
ears.

According to a US friend who visited me a few years ago, the
"terrestrial" (broadcast) signal I get here in Edinburgh is far
superior to what she gets on her cable box! (in fact she thought
that it was the cable signal)

Cable sure ain't what it was all hyped up to be when it was
introduced. It was supposed to be commercial free, except for
the broadcast networks, always available, unaffected by storms,
and high quality signal.
Hah.
Then came infomercials.
Now the only channels that are free of advertising (except for
their own shows) are some for which you pay extra, above and
beyond the basic fees.
Where we live, the cable signal is better than the broadcast
signal - which is piss-poor for all 4 channels that are broadcast
in this area (we live quite a ways from the broadcast towers,
with a range or two of mountains in between). Most of the time.
Sometimes there's a glitch in the transmission network,
sometimes our connection to the outside box needs to be rebalanced.
What really gets me, though, is paying for commercials!
(I know, I know, I could disconnect...)

Better reception? What about better programming?
I don't have cable because it would *really* steam me to actually pay for
tv and still find nothing to watch.

I remember paying a TV license fee when I lived in England for a
year. In the US we pay directly for cable or satellite use, and
indirectly for "free" broadcast TV via jacked-up prices that
cover the costs of advertising consumer products heavily.

To hear some US posters rant (in other NGs), it seems they think
the UK is the only country in the world with a tv license.

Most of our TV watching is not from the broadcast networks.
Animal Planet, History Channel, National Geographic, Discovery.
CNN, MS-NBC for news. Re-run channels for things like Star Trek,
MASH, West-Wing, ER, Whose Line Is It Anyway.
And with about 150 channels, sometimes I STILL can't find
anything I want to watch! 'Specially in the middle of the night.
What broadcast shows do you watch regularly? Are there any good
ones out there? My list is:
Dr. Phil - occasionally
Studio 60 - funny and quirky so far
Law and Order - occasionally
Boston Legal - going downhill fast
ER - scraping bottom this season; it's a habit
Shark - I like James Woods but the script is pretty lame.
Nature, Nova and Scientific American Frontiers on PBS - if topic
interests me.
Oh, my. That's far too long!

Several European countries' main broadcasting companies are actually
government-owned/-regulated, and therefore also commercial-free, hence
the TV license (which also pays for radio).

Heh. The only time we ever saw an "ad" on the governments TV station
(NRK), was during the time of year when the TV licence is due. Then we'd
be served up a short, funny movie showing a bunch of FBI-looking fellows
carrying huge antennas to triangulate where an unlicensed TV set was in
use.
We always thought that was a joke, but it turns out they hire senior
citizens to walk around neighborhoods, listening or looking for TVs at
addresses not registered with the licensing office.
Ah, it's good to have a front door so solid no one standing outside it
can hear if your TV is on. ;-)

We dropped cable at least 18 years ago when the basic fees plus HBO went
up to $50 a month with taxes. We figured for that price we could buy the
few movies and TV shows we were actually watching, and still have money
left over. We do deal with less-than-stellar reception on the broadcast
channels, but I hear that is also a problem even with cable or satellite.
And the joy of not having to peel the kids from the TV set or my DH away
from ESPN is without price. :-)

Yeah, I quickly realized that (we're about 5 episodes behind the

Not showing here.
I watch all the CSI flavors (they're hugely popular here in Norway,
too), and "Without a Trace", "Medium", "Ghostwhisperer", "Close to Home"
and "My Name Is Earl". Oh, dear, this list is getting long. I also watch
"NCIS", "Jake 2.0", "Andromeda" and AFHV plus the occassional JAG
episode (though that's getting a bit old).
And still there are other US series showing (including a number of soaps
and reality shows and Oprah), but I can't remember their names since I
don't watch.

I do CSI (original only), Lost, Medium, Battlestar Gallactica, Heroes,
Six Degrees, Jericho, NUMB3RS, Wire in the Blood (BBC), Cold Case,
Without a Trace, I don't remember what all else. Needless to say, my
DVR is over 90% full and I have to watch a bunch of them to make room
for new episodes. It's lovely when they go into reruns, though. I'm
still watching new episodes! :-) And all with no commercials. Well,
blurry-looking commercials I go through at a zillion miles an hour.

I initially subscribed to cable solely because it was the only way I could
(or still can) get PBS.

Don't bother watching it now, I think it's going down to its final end.
In fact, I think it's gone on one season too long. Too bad, too.

NUMB3RS and Cold Case air here, too, just not on at the moment. Two of
my favorites, especially NUMB3RS. Another favorite is "Criminal Minds"
has aired, too, but they haven't started the next season here yet.
