Default Akathisia - meds change

I was on Rispiridone Consta 37.5mg every 2 weeks and I sometimes suffer from
Akathisia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Akathisia its like this feeling of
not being able to relax and when its really bad I can feel my heart
pounding... the sensation I get is so uncomfortable every passing minute is
a struggle. It sometimes lasts 2 hours or more and I just lay down and try
to relax untill it passes over, but nothing I do makes it any better if it
happens when I`m out I just rush to get home in a terrible state. My pdoc
has reduced the dose to 25mg in an attempt to reduce the side effects, has
anyone else every suffered this condition it is supposed to very common with
anti-psychotics.

I had some of that with Abilify. Nasty side effect. I couldn't sit through
a movie at a theater. I had to get up and leave a great movie.

I paced back and forth for 12 hours a day on a high dose of risperdal
due to akathisia.

The akathisia (restlessness) did improve on a lower dose of risperdal.

I had that problem with Celexa (an anti-depressant and anti-anxiety
med). It was getting worse and worse, and finally after 5 days of being
on it, I talked with my pdoc and she said to go off of it. After 3 or 4
days I was back to normal. It was probably one of my most irritable
times in life.

The original idea was that it would replace Wellbutrin and Paxil in my
meds, that included Zyprexa at the time.

So, now I take Abilify, Wellbutrin, and Paxil.

My pdoc at the time didn't seem to have any idea what caused the
reaction. It was disheartening to me. It influenced me to do more
research on the meds, and I came to realize even the manufacturers
website indicates they don't know how it works exactly.

If a small pill can do that, just imagine what other things can do that
are more common in our environment.

I wonder how ions affect people, because we are surrounded by them. I
seem to be less tired since switching from a CRT to an LCD display. I
wonder if the ions have something to do with that.

There is a great deal we don't know about how the human body chemistry
works. As I understand it, we still don't know what the purpose is of
different blood types, amongst many other things.

akathisia is one bad ass dude, it happened to me on halorperidol and again
on sulperide....changing meds sent it packing but it took a few days for it
to
flush through the system.

Try some anti-parkinsom med like biperiden. It counteracts the effects of
neuroleptica. I once had a drooling effect from the neuroleptics and they
gave me biperiden in the clinic and the drooling stopped.

I suffered it pretty badly on stelazine and abilify. Did a lot of
pacing. I had some on the risperdal pills too. Now I take the
risperdal consta shot 50 mgs. I do have a lot of anxiety and always
feel like I have to be doing something. I think a lot of the what
feels like anxiety is in fact akasthisia. I have a hard time falling
alseep at night to0. The doctor just moved the shots up from every
two weeks to every ten days. He was pretty tough on me getting it
every ten days when I said I'd rather just have it every two weeks
Told me he wouldn't treat me if I didn' t do that and I can't go to a
private doctor because I'm on the patient assistance program at the
clinic. Today I got a shot after only nine days because the nurse
wouldn't be in the clinic tomorrow. I kind of felt like I was going
to fall out after that and my muscles seem stiffer. I wonder if that
is just my imagination though.

I started taking Paxil in 2004 perscribed by my GP, I soon came to the
attention of a pdoc in hospital who stopped giving me the Paxil cold turkey
and started giving me 4mg oral Rispiridone, 8 weeks after withdrawing from
Paxil I started suffering from Akathisia, I got rid of it by taking some
Paxil I had from a previous perscription then my pdoc transferred me over to
Celexa. I was fine like this for a few months no noticeable side effects
then I just stopped taking the Rispiridone becuase I felt there was no
reason to take it. I ended up back in hospital Sept 2004 and they gave the
4mg oral Rispirdone & Celexa combination again.

In 2005 on a daytrip to France I had the feelings of Akathisia again it was
terrible I suffered the rest of the day, in the following months I would
sometimes get it when walking about but mainly it happened when I went out
to nightclubs, the feelings made me leave less then an hour of arriving. I
mentioned that I thought it was the Celexa to my pdoc and he withdrew me
from it, but unbeknown to him I also stopped taking the Rispiridone. I was
fine after that for about 8 months and no longer had any Akathisia, then I
had a major breakdown and ended up back in hospital they gave me Rispiridone
4mg again and also gave me Haldol for awhile, I then had what could be
described as the worse Akathisia ever it was bordering on NMS.

So they withdrew me from Haldol and gave me 4mg oral Rispiridone for a few
weeks, then they decided they were going to give me Rispiridone injections
as I hadn't complied with taking the medication in the past so they started
me on a 25mg shot of Rispirdone every 2 weeks, I didn't notice any side
effects for a few months after that, then I reported that I was having
nightmares so they decided to increase the Rispirdone to 37.5mg they also
gave me oral Rispiridone to take to help with the transition. The worse
thing happened in that I had terrible Akathisia bordering on NMS the same as
when I was taking Haldol about 3 times during the transition period, I
figure it was down to having a 37.5mg shot of Rispirdone + taking the
tablets as well - a really high dose!

As soon as they stopped the oral medication my Akathisia lessened but I
still had milder Akathisia symptoms like back in 2005 from time to time. The
extra Rispiridone I was taking 37.5mg instead of 25mg didn't help with the
nightmares anyway. It was not untill I mentioned to my pdoc last visit about
the side effects that he reduced my Rispirdone dose to 25mg. So hopefully
now I will be like that period in 2006 when I was taking 25mg Rispiridone
for a few months without any noticeable side effects.
