Default AnhesierBush (soap box alert)

might get bought out and alot of people are really upset about it. I
almost got into a fist fight with a guy at work over it. This guy on
myspace is trying to get people to stop buying the potential buyers
other products.
I mean BudLight is going to taste the same whoever owns the label.
The thing is, if you get hired in with AB doing anything, you have
good pay and benefits. NO other company in town treats its people as
good as they do. Where unions had 30% of the labor force they are
looking at less than 10% now. We are working longer, harder, for less
benefits and pay. Now its AB's turn. Where do we draw the line? At
AB? The fat cat in our little town? What happened to all the union
shut outs and walmarts that have been killing small businesses? Now
people must draw a line in the sand at their beer? WTF?
I say bye-bye AB.

A union "brother" has spoken to me about organizing a union for
security when I worked downtown. "Yeah, you should organize and get
better treatment and wages."
The truth of the matter is the only thing that keeps unions afloat is
customers that use their services or buy their products because
they're union. Now it's whose got the better website or cheaper
deals.
Boeing used to have a union security team here in STL which you had to
be ex military/police. They got paid REALLY good and was treated with
respect. The union just got the boot and now its been contracted.
It's a sign of the times people. Unions just don't work.
I don't know the answer - if governent gets involved, they'll only
help who contributes to their campaigns or does them favors.
Capitalism is a great thing, but it leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Isn't it amazing how quickly the union concept went off the rails? In only a
few decades it went from helping with atrocious treatment of workers to a
government employee showing up at work drunk and beating up his boss and
getting reinstated on grievance (true story!).

Up here the most prominent union shops are in the auto industry. Although
I'm not hostile to unions because I don't want the 19th century to come
back, it doesn't sit well with even me when a guy gets $40 an hour for
turning the same six screws over and over again.

If it wasn't for the union, perhaps chrysler and ford could sell a
cheaper vehicle. Then when they wanted to raise the standards and
price (like the Japanese) they could actually compete.

The unions have a strangle hold on business - and business is shaking
it off.

even made.

Yeah and its stupid.. my economy car gets better highway mileage then a prius..
i think prius is just a status symbol.. prius only gets good mileage in stop and
go traffic and at lower speeds because that is when the electric engine kicks
in.

I've never seen hard evidence that labour cost is that big a factor in cost
of production. It's just the one thing a business can do something about.
Ford can't get cheaper steel, plastic, machines, etc., but it could hire
cheaper people if it weren't for the union. So the reality is a bit
distorted by what businesses don't say.

Which is how most people in my city drive. When I had a car most of my
mileage came from commuting back and forth to work, on a freeway at 15 miles
an hour, with stop and go, because it was rush hour. Not saying that's
universal; it depends on how a specific person drives. If I had a car now
that I'm not working, I wouldn't drive it in the city much because parking
is too hard to find and too expensive, and I would avoid driving during rush
hour, so most of my driving would be out of town freeway stuff. So something
like a Prius used to make sense for me but now it doesn't.

True enough, but if they could cut labor costs in half?
My dad went to trade school to become a setup man (which is like top
gun machinist - nc machining). The guy up the street (who flunked out
of highschool) worked for Chryster and made ALOT more money and all
the guy did all day was turn a wrench all day on an assembly line.
Unions are like a pyramid scheme. Only if other countries get
involved in unions could this system work.

If they cut labour costs in half, a lot of big spenders would lose spending
power. High wages by part of the workforce do keep the economy moving. It's
only when everyone's wages are high that prices rise across the board and
the "high" becomes low.

Many countries do have unions. France, for one, is very big on them. But
labour costs comparison is most relevant now to China, and a bit to India. I
can't see either of those countries permitting trade unions to even get off
the ground.

Did you read that MSNBC story about the China quake and aftermath launching
a kind of glasnost movement? It's exciting stuff that even American
journalists are noticing.

No I didn't hear that. I've always wanted to travel to China, but a
free China. Watch some street urchin push a bible in my hand and I'm
carted off to a reeducation camp.
I may be overexagerating a bit.
The great wall would be cool to see. Do a little shopping...eat some
camel's hump (Jackie Chan swears by the stuff in a movie).
