Default Asenapine trial still open

I'm trying to find out if my doc's office has the study. There is
another place in my city that has it - they actually have a med that
helps with memory and with response time in a conversation.
I hate studies, but I also hate gaining all this damn weight. My
uniform is getting tight around the waistline.

Don't you have to go off of all your regular meds to be in a study? I
would't want to do that...

The cognitive one you don't. Some studies you just add a med and some
you trade meds.
I only take one med. 15mg of zyprexa. I'd gladly give it up to try
asenapine. The promise of losing some weight is intoxicating.

In a properly done double-blind study, you could be randomly assigned to a
group that has a placebo or another existing neuroleptic for comparison.
Nobody knows what pill you got until the study is over.

Also, they may have different groups on different secret dosages.

Watch yer ass.

I once took a med [cough] that no matter how hard I tried, I still gained
weight. A lot of weight. Rapidly.

I will. My doc has pushed back my appt to April. This is getting to
be a pain in the ass. I will try getting a hold of her research dept
tomorrow - since they never called me back.
If the study is a double blind one, I won't enroll. I gotta know I'll
be on asenapine before I go through with it.

My sister is a research nurse and said that the article I posted
before showed very favorably towards asenapine.

Here's a snippet of an email my sis sent me:

Both drugs are showing clinically significant resolution of
symptoms... it doesn't say which one is better than the other as far
as performance... Both of them were tested against placebo which isn't
a big deal... something is better than nothing... so, you look at the
toxicity profile...
The percentage of occurrence is slightly greater in the olanzapine
group by about 8%... meaning they noted 8% more symptoms in patients
taking that therapy. So, now, the question is what symptoms and how
severe... which that study doesn't say... if they're terrible, or
interfere with quality of life, it might help make your decision:

asenapine included sedation, dizziness, headache, somnolence, and
fatigue.

Olanzapine was most commonly associated with sedation, dry mouth,
dizziness, headache, somnolence, and weight gain.

Did I answer your question? They look about the same in
effectiveness... the "o" drug causes more side effects but the
question is severity. A severe headache caused by one is better than
a little dry mouth... that's what you'd have to tease out.

---------------------------

I just read it and now I'm not so sure I'll go ahead with it. It
causes fatigue and sedation - I've been down that road with seroquel.
Perhaps I will wait to learn more.

http://clinicaltrials.gov/show/NCT00174265

seems to be the study info...looks like a double blind study.
Couldn't I just sign up, get a bottle of pills, and if they say Lilly
on the pill, ditch the study?
I wonder how this "blind" study works? I'm sure if I feel the same,
they gave me zyprexa, and I could drop out.

Asenapine is currently being looked over by the FDA for approval. We
should know sometime in the next 4 or 5 months if it will be approved.
I've read that's it's supposed to help with cognitive and negative
symptoms and have a slightly more favorable side effect profile.
Hopefully this drug turns out to be decent.
