GABA is an inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain, and very directly
blocks dopamine and epinephrine and I also believe it partially blocks
serotonin too, but sometimes it can increase serotonin slightly. It
can also act as a minor stimulant in some parts of the brain, as it
has been known to bring people out of a coma that they've been in for
years. Date rape increases GABA and the sleeping pills on the market
(Sonata,
Ambien) increase GABA as well. Benzos (Xanax,
Valium) also
increase GABA and are very addictive and you quickly build a tolerance
to them. Same with the sleeping pills, you should not take them every
night (like I sometimes do).
The side effects of increasing GABA are that you feel tired and
relaxed, they lower the activity in your amygdala, which then makes
you less paranoid and lowers your flight or fight response. It also
weakens your memory, especially short term memory, and makes you feel
very dreamy. Many people abuse these drugs and take them
recreationally because they feel slightly euphoric and relaxing.
To be honest, this is the first drug of its kinda that both blocks
dopamine and increases GABA and I have no idea what it will feel like,
but I do believe this is a completely novel way of stabilizing
dopamine and that it makes sense that it will have minor side effects,
and it should be just as effective as the drugs that are out today. It
is only in Phase II trials, so we will see what happens once it's been
in Phase III for a while. Until then we all have to play the waiting
game and hope we can manage until these newer drugs make their way to
our pharmacies.

PS - There are 5 Phases starting from 0 and going to 4.

Phase 3 is considered the most important and most watched.
