Try buying gifts on eBay. And don't let sellers scam you by burying
their profit margin in shipping and handling charges. In Canada
lettermail has to be less than 3/4" thick, but in the U.S. the
definition of lettermail includes small parcels and it rarely costs
more than $3 to mail something under a pound from Maine to California.
If purchasing a paperback book, CD, or DVD as a gift, you should be
able to get it media mailed for less than $1. Lots of eBay sellers in
the U.S. are happy to giftwrap and tag an item for a small extra
charge, and a number have done it for me for free; and there's no
issue with shipping directly to the gift recipient. Heck, at Christmas
2006, I exchanged gifts with a guy in the U.K. that way. He bought me
something sold in Canada and I bought him something sold in England.
