Default crazy fun thing to do

I added a free unscrambled wireless port to my internet service. I did it
with multiple routers, so I believe my computers are protected. So far, I
have about 6 or 7 neighbors who use my internet service.

There have been times, when I couldn't afford a proper internet connection.
I figure some of my neighbors may be in that boat.

My only concern is that if my neighbors do something illegal, my door might
get broken down by the authorities before they discover that they are just
looking for one of my neighbors.

It is kind of fun to watch the wireless light flash, when they are on. I
also periodically check the router's log of recent users.

I have neither the technology or skills to see what the heck they are
actually doing on there. One connection was from a Wii, so I guess a kid
was playing video games over the internet.

My own uses have had no related problems. I even stream video without the
extra traffic slowing me down.

You could probably "sniff" some packets. Unfortunately the first time
someone happens upon a bad site, does illegal file sharing, or uses your
connection to commit fraud you could get into trouble. You may also
have a bandwidth quota that you're unaware of. If you exceed your quota
they could charge a lot for the extra GB of data. I don't know of any
"unlimited" accounts anymore. The cable companies shutdown connections
after an exceeded limit sometimes, or throttle your connection.

There's also the tricky issue of abetting service theft. If those other
people couldn't afford an internet connection anyway, then he isn't really
doing anything wrong, but that might not matter legally. I don't know
whether it would matter that he's not charging anyone money for using his
wireless. (If he does start charging money then he could be in criminal
trouble.) The person with the Wii makes me wonder because if someone can
afford a Wii, they can likely afford their own internet connection. So it
sounds like a fun hobby and has a ring of civil disobedience to it, but even
if this person's "customers" are perfectly law-abiding there are risks.

Sniffing other people's packets gets into hacking, and that's a completely
different ballgame.

Here in germany, if more than one person is using the same connection you
have to notify the isp, but i donīt know if you have to pay more or not.

Why, the burden of the prosection is "beyond reasonable doubt."

"But sir, my router is not secured." Sounds like reasonable doubt to
me.
