I was over at my parents house tonight and they were about to kick me out for
the night and they discovered they had no heat. So my Mom checked the furnace
and discovered the pilot light is out. She wouldn't bother with relighting it
even though the wind is 50 mph outside and the temps are dipping into the 30's.
This is a VERY OLD FURNACE. I don't know if there is a thermocouple on the pilot
light assembly to shut off the natural gas when the pilot light goes out; but my
mom said the furnace was warm so it must have gone out recently and she didn't
smell any hint of gas. I'm worried, it is possible this furnace predates
thermocouple technology and if so the house might explode when my mom turns on
the kitchen light when she wakes up in the morning or if the phone rings or the
phone is used to call anybody. If the thermocouple technology is working as
advertised on the internet, there probably isn't a problem.
She'll have to call the furnace repairman tomorrow. The gas stove still worked,
so the gas is still available to the household.
But my parents would rather go to bed straight away than give a rat's ass about
whether their house will blow up overnight. They have a habit with ignoring
DANGER SIGNS, especially around me. Heck, they'd have done hit and runs with
their car if it weren't for me demanding they leave a note to their victims,
after 5 minutes of intense arguing with my parents. They are notorious for
blowing off any semblance of safety when I'm around. So, now it comes down to
this...the furnace that threatens to blow up the house, and they couldn't care
less about proper procedure.
