Default for football fans

Yesterday's Italy-Netherlands game was the first one that looked like it
belonged in the Euro. The Italians played well but were steamrolled by what
looks like an unstoppable force. From what I've seen so far it looks a lot
like Germany-Netherlands in the final.

This afternoon it's Spain-Russia and Greece-Sweden. The latter game can be
dismissed out of hand because it has the nearly unwatchable Greek team
playing in it. The former is an east european team's last chance to make a
decent showing of itself. So far the Czechs, Romania and Poland have looked
like duds, and Croatia didn't impress me in its numbnutted eking out of a
1-0 win against an Austrian team ranked lower than Canada in the FIFA
rankings.

Spain look a good bet now although they are known to crash and burn.

I'd go for Germany as my tip, much as it pains my poor broken English
heart.

I am not convinced that Spain can sustain its form throughout the
tournament. They've been a consistent tournament underperformer. The Germans
have a touch of creativity about their play now, which for that nation's
footballers is unusual. So all in all I agree with you.

As for England, I'm afraid English supporters were shafted by a substandard
trainer. By the time the bad player selection and on-field strategy were
remedied, it was too late for England to recover. But I see that as an
aberration and expect England to be back in the World Cup two years from
now.

I think the Dutch game against Italy was a one hit wonder.
I know, I am Dutch. It would surprise me if they hit the half finals.

Lol Berty! Way to be unpatriotic! Just kidding. I'm realistic about
Holland's team as well, just not so cynical because their losing doesn't
affect me emotionally. To reduce the Azurri to quivering jelly is such a
gargantuan accomplishment that, even if Holland only plays 10% as well in
future matches, the title is theirs for the taking.

Hi Berty...

In the absence of England I am now an official supporter of Holland.
Hope they make it to the final, I have always admired Dutch football way
back to the the time of Cruyff.
