The key rule to grifting is you need an organization. Grifting is
just the art of organized crime. You need a front, some way to show
people that you are legitimate. Being a celebrity helps, or having
some kind of buisness that is already on the verge of being illegal.
Then when you find someone who is interested in the front, you keep
teasing them with the opportunity of a job, or sex, or money.
Whatever temptation appeals to them most. And then you want to slowly
lead them down the rabbit hole, using everyone else in the gang. You
want to get them thinking about how they are being grifted, but you
want to make sure they feel as though they can't even prove the gang
is connected to the organization. It needs to feel as if the gang
members aren't related at all.
You want them to believe that the gang is there, and are real hard
knocks criminals. Then you just start manipulating and intimidating
them. Asking for small time favors from them, begging them for money,
stealing small things from them when you can get away with it,
threatening them, and asking them to sell things to you, or selling
them junk.
Finally the gang gets them into a place where they give you something
of theirs that is valuable, because they are intimidated, and want to
buy your friendship. Buy protection from the gang. But it isn't
every good enough, and you will keep coming back for more. Just
begging, stealing, and borrowing. Sometimes you don't even need a
front of your own, or a real buisness. You can just stalk down
someone else, and manipulate them into looking like they are connected
to your organization. You might call grifting, Gang Stalking.
