Default Introduction

Hello,

am 58 years old and have had schizophrenia all of my life. My teen
years were extremely rough but I only required one two month stay in
our state hospital. The prognosis was not good and at least a dozen
medical professionals who treated mental illnesses believed that I
would most likely spend my life in an institution.

My wife and I have an 18 year old daughter with multiple disabilities.
At a very early age she presented with psychotic episodes and her
positive and negative schizophrenic symptoms started getting way out
of control last fall. Since then she has been hospitalized on three
occasions and diagnosed with schizophrenia (chronic undifferentiated ,
same as me).
I have worked full time since 1966 and hold a responsible job. I have
been married for thirty five years and along with my wife have raised
two daughters, one being 34 and the younger being 18.

Although I still have some psychotic symptoms mine has been a rather
happy and successful life. The irony being that my daughter probably
inherited her illness from me and her future does not look very bright
at this time.

I started a a weblog at http://schizodad.blogspot.com/index.html to
share my past and ongoing experiences as a person with Schizophrenia
as well of the parent of a child learning to live with Schizophrenia.
I will try to make it interesting, informative and hopefully uplifting
to readers. I have "come out of the closet" at work and to my friends.
By everyone understanding why I act the way I do makes my life much
easier. Also, I am no longer ashamed of my mental illness. I am proud
that I have led a happy and successful life in spite of this
disability. Also, by talking about mental illness to my friends
lessens the anxiety that they have when encountering other individuals
with various mental disorders.

Ted
