Default My experience with schizophrenia...

I have been tormented by a female voice for about 4 years. The
last year in particular has been really bad, because she is here every
day continually, commenting, reacting, provoking, threatening, making
jarring noises in my ear, talking in my music, tv, etc. The voice (and
other voices) use to come and go; a few months of distress, and then a
few months of peace, but now it seems she is here for good.

This will sound funny to some people, but last summer I saw a
Buddhist Monk about this problem. He was saying, he believes it is an
'earth-bound' spirit that is bothering me, and that he has dealt with
this before and can cure me. The first thing he did for me didn't
work, and so he tried another method, and then another, but still
nothing had changed for me, the voice was still there. He eventually
had to leave, all of this was in the span of 5 weeks, he was only in
town for a certain amount of time. One common theme that kept on
arising, was the idea that because I have trouble ignoring her, I am
preventing the things that this Monk is doing for me from having any
effect. Believe me, I was trying to ignore her, but her ability to
provoke repressed anger, fear, guilt, shame, make it near
impossible.

Anyway, lately my Dad has been trying to convince me that this
voice is simply a creation of my mind, that it is not an entity but
rather something I created. I would love for this to be true, but that
is really hard for me to believe.

I find it hard to believe, too. I can't comment on the monk's explanation,
as it involves questions of personal religious beliefs. However, if we
assume that the monk's explanation is not the right one, I would suggest
that the voice is a creation of your brain, not of your mind. In other
words, it doesn't arise from anything you do or think, but because of
abnormalities of your neurology.

You are causing your own disease.
Schizophrenia is a disorder of separation of ones consciousness from
itself. (Dr. Louis Sass has referred to it as a philosophical
disorder.) It has never been cured by any drug. It can be cured by
understanding that this separation is your own activity. You are
creating this schizophrenic state in each moment. It is possible for
you to stop creating it in this moment too. Only you can undo what you
are doing. It is literally as simple as that. Read The Knee of
Listening, and the Method of the Siddhas. They will show you how to
stop separating yourself from yourself.
