Default my psychotherapy session

Therapy going great until my therapist interrupted me because my time ran
out. He apologized but said he had another patient waiting. I complained
about that happening over and over again, because at the next appointment we
never pick up where we left off. In the intervening week something always
happens that seems more important to talk about. He told me that that's
normal and happens a lot, but he did book my next appointment for an hour
instead of the usual 40 minutes, which he says he avoids doing because his
billing gets capped at 46 minutes. I suggested having more than one
appointment a week but he says that "becomes counterproductive."

I want to trust this guy. I want to believe that therapy is not linear and
that, in the seven days between appointments, my mind keeps sorting things
out even thought I'm not conscious of it. But in that first paragraph I
stuck to the bare facts, and the impression they leave is ambiguous. Is this
guy really different or just another shrink?

One doctor I went to wouldn't say nothin' and I just spent all that time filling
the void. It makes me talk too much and say things I should keep to myself.

Another doctor only saw me twice in a year, absolute neglect despite the
side-effects reported to his nurse who was handling meds for 150 others too.

Another therapist, well, sees me for an hour a week and he only understands HALF
of what I'm sayin'. 24 x 7 = 168 hours a week and he gets 1 of them and in LA
I've really got too much to say, and again, he only understood HALF of what I
said.

I've got too much history to be startin' up ANY professional therapy, and the
likelihood of involuntary incarceration is near 100%.

My p-docs seem to stick to med management.
Has anyone really benefited by psychotherapy?

I prefer meds to psychotherapy. Meds make most of the symptoms
go away and what is left are psychotic memories that do not make
sense to anyone.

I feel like I *am* benefitting. It was a psychotherapeutic assessment that
led to my rediagnosis, and that's what really helped me put things into
place. I still don't understand the mechanism of my psychoses because not
even the experts do, but at least I understand their cognitive causes, and
that's something I used to think was impossible.

Therapy really helps me. I love my psychologist. He is like a great
friend to talk to.

I also see a psychiatrist for meds who I'm not crazy about.

There's a psychologist on my treatment team, but for some reason he's not
openly involved in my cognitive therapy. It's my psychiatrist who's doing
it. I'm *very* lucky to be getting psychotherapy from a psychiatrist,
because most psychotherapy around here is offered by family doctors or even
nurses with some additional education.

I really don't know what psychotherapy is. It must be like Fight Club.

Hi Miki,

I think if we are all connected at some level, it feels strange to me now
that one part should condition his helping of another part to circumstances
that seem to me to be outside of the real connection.
An arm should not say to a nose that it would not help to scratch the nose
any more today because of payment regulations.

Hmm. If you scratch a nose too long it starts to bleed. But I don't think
that's why a psychotherapist's billings are capped.

Psychotherapy is hard for a layman like me to define. It looks like two
people having a conversation, except that one of them is a trained pro and
there's more going on behind the scenes with him than the patient, even a
well-informed patient like me, can see. The idea is to help the patient sort
out his crap by talking to him and making suggestions and teaching him how
to deal with certain issues.

That sounds interesting. I might try that.
