Well, they did it. They landed on Mars and sent back pictures.

The first time I ever saw Mars' surface I thought it was depressing. The
total absence of life was profound.

Yes!! Very good news.

You know, the reaction I had was, "Gee. That looks so normal!" And it did
look normal, meaning normal for dusty, rocky terrain. It took a moment for
the absence of life to register on me. Now I look at Mars pictures and have
both reactions at the same time. So ordinary looking, yet so lifeless. The
contrast is odd.

There might be life on Mars that's so alien we can't recognize it. I think
we give ourselves too much credit for being able to identify
extraterrestrial lifeforms.

Monday

Thanks for the comments. This morning's news conference had a photo taken
from an orbiter ("MRO"), showing the parchute and back-shell of the lander
on their way down to Mars.

They're saying that the ice is under the dirt and rock (perhaps mixed
together).
Still waiting on the data the mass spectrometer is supposed to send.
I imagine there will be champagne popping once they find water.

There's the possibility that there's martian methanogens.
