| | | need computer help I use Windows XP Pro x64 (64-bit). I'm having the devil of a time
finding a TV tuner card that has 64-bit software available for it.
What little can be found is either Vista software or is meant for a
combo video card and TV tuner card. I'm satisfied with my overpriced
ripoff video card, which still has 512 MB of built-in video memory,
and don't really want to blow money on another one. I've searched high
and low and I can't find anything except USB TV tuner sticks that sell
for $60 each. If anyone knows of an affordable TV tuner card, internal
or external, that will work with my computer, please pipe up.

I'll have to upgrade my tuner card within the next 2 years.
I'm ok with my ATI card's hardware, but the software that goes with it
has little to be desired. If you find one - check the web to see if
people are having alot of difficulty with it. |

settop box digital to analog converter affordable. This settop box could be
connected to your older tuner card.
Actually, I fail to see the advantage of using a tuner card in the computer
over having an actual TV set separately. Does the computer do DVR
functions? If so, a separate DVR might be a better choice, if you can
afford it.

In Canada even the over-the-air antenna signals are going digital in
2008. Analog tuner cards will be useless then. Thank you so much for
pointing that out to me. I guess, if I really want to watch TV, I can
go to a discards store and get a cheap miniature TV set for $20 and
then simply throw it in the trash or sell it to someone overseas once
it becomes useless here.
You've done me a huge favour by reminding me of this. Thank you.

QN, I just like the elegance of being able to watch/record/play/
everything on my computer. But I think I'm going to get a miniature
analog TV instead.
The coupon you're referring to is for Americans, and I'm in Canada.

I am in the same predicament with Vista Home Premium x64.
If XP Pro x64 is like Vista, you can still run some 32 bit (x86) software,
so software is not the issue for me, for me it is drivers to support legacy
hardware (i.e. my TV tuner in my video card).
Here is some TV tuner software I came across the other night called Beyond
TV 4, 21day free trial.... http://www.snapstream.com/
My ATI All-In-Wonder 9600 has a built in TV tuner and I could not find
supporting TV tuner drivers from the vendor (ATI/AMD) but I got it to run
with Beyond TV 4. Unfortunately the TV tuner/Video card combo doesn't run
smoothly in Vista.
I have pretty much decided to go with a new dedicated PCI TV tuner card and
move away from the ATI All-In-Wonder type video/TV tuner combo.
Don't know if this helps, but that is where I am at in the technological
jungle....

I checked it out, Jim, and it seems kinda pricey. If I hadn't already
sold my old analog TV tuner card I would try it now. Thanks

I'll probably get a HD tuner card for the pc as my monitor would be
able to display HD. It would be fun to hook both of them up at the

There's a neat little item that's selling like hotcakes on eBay. It
looks like a pen drive and plugs into your USB port but on the other
end is a standard Cable TV connector and it's really a TV tuner for
your computer. Bidding on it has reached maxima of between $37 and $45
and they charge $16 to ship the thing. If you want the URL I can dig
it out for you. I only wish I could afford a toy like that right now.

They had a sale on LCD HD 30" for $500. Not 1080p, but ahhh the

Lol QN nobody needs HD! Sure it's a nicer TV picture, but to my
(admittedly bad) eyes non-HD TV looks sufficiently good. That's why
I'm waiting for the next yuppie toy to hit the market and for the
price of HD hardware to drop. This has already largely happened with
those formerly-expensive 15" LCD computer monitors, which at least
have the advantage of being lightweight, compact, devoid of radiation-
emitting picture tubes, and mercifully free of a glass screen. I see
reason to buy an LCD monitor or TV but absolutely none to buy
something just because it's HD.
