| | | Playing a Schizophrenic Hello, alt.support.schizophrenia!
I apologize if this is the wrong group for me to post this in.
I'm in a bit of a situation here, however, and I'm really looking for
some advice from you posters here.
I'm an actor, see, and I've very recently been given a role as the main
character in a film. The film highlights this character's life and
trials as a Disorganized Schizophrenic.
I've been reading almost non-stop for the last little while trying to
get a hold on exactly what a disorganized schizophrenic is and what
they experience but to this point I've found mostly medical
documentation and not too much actual perspective from someone with the
illness.
I really want to accurately portray this character -- I don't want to
add to the misinformation of Schizophrenia.
And so I ask for your help. Please, alt.support.schizophrenic, if you
have any advice for me (any form is perfect. I'd also like to hear your
stories about how the illness has effected you) I would be forever
grateful for your efforts.
Have a great week, everyone.... and my sincere apologies again if I'm
posting this in the wrong group or if my post is considered rude..

Jason,
If you want to go the 'method acting' route stay up for 2 days before
your key shoots. You'll be hallucinating in no time. Also, let your
hygiene go. You might want to also take up smoking and start hanging
out with schizophrenics. Good luck.

It is not, as my neighbour labels it, "split personality"....that is
apparently a somewhat rare condition and you probably know that
already..
In my case...when it occured to me in the past..it was complete
introspection...in which I analysed absolutely everything and there
was no peace from the torment of worry...concern that my I knew my
thoughts were racing but there was nothing I could do to stop the from
racing. Thinking about people mostly...ie what did they think about
me...am I somehow different, are my teeth too dirty, etc ...
It is hard to recognise the difference between imagination and reality
after a time....hence the delusions. Thinking so much that it becomes
hard to think...so much thought ...I could not speak properly when I
was first diagnosed. I thought I was making sense..[in a way] but it
made no sense at all to the people around me. Just jibberish. [Because
I was trying to say too much a once]. It started with unemployment and
the depression associated with it...I thought of myself as a
bludger...I was smoking pot also. Then with a lessening self asteem I
became too self conscious and somewhat paranoid...Then my thoughts
raced more and more as I tried to find an answer to the
difficulties...As there was no answer I felt an increasing sense of
isolation and helplessness...I was lucky to recieve early intervention
and medication...Anti-psycotic medication. There are other symptoms
also however that I did not acquire...Other symptoms for other
sufferers...Sorry but I do not know what they are though...
Anger is usually associated with bi-polar disorder and not
schizophrenia though. However the delusions occur with both. |

| | | Re: Playing a Schizophrenic Go to http://www.holotropic.com and you may order "The Adventure
of Self Discovery" by Dr. Stanislav Grof, a psychiatrist who came from
from Prague, Czechoslovakia during the "Cold War".
Schizophrenia has been found to be a physical state of having too
many connections between the neurons of the brain caused by a gene
called DISC1.
Extra connections like this awaken more than the normal 10% of the
brain, as does LSD and the muscarinic nervous system stimulation of the
vagal stimulation of Holotropic Breathing.
In Grof Transpersonal you will learn how to enter the realm of
schizophrenia, the Underworld, and you can be authentic.
To learn more, read the posts of "lahunken" in http://groups.yahoo.com/group/alchemy61/ starting with Post #1.
Also, you may participate in the actors' association of http://groups.yahoo.com/group/officialytclub/ which is a Young's Town
group where you can give movie writers new ideas for their creations. We
have seen concepts we have sent in used in recent movies.
Like, for example, when time travel was depicted, always, time was
presented as a straight line where messing with the past could be
disasterous for the future.
Wrong! They were ignorant of, or ignored, Dr. Hugh Everett's
probabilty timelines sideways in time. Fortuantely, that has changed,
and the sixth dimension of probability timeline travel has been allowed
in some recent movies. |

Hello Jason
Firstly, whether this film will accurately portray someone with
schizophrenia or not, will largely depend on the script
itself and what purpose the film is being made for, and the writers
beliefs surrounding schizophrenia. I take it you have read the script
so you must think it is accurate to the information you learned about
schizophrenia?
I am also an actor (stage) and a writer too. It is hard to know
exactly how you should play it since I know nothing of the script but
things I would not like to see is this movie are things that portray
everyone with schizophrenia as unaware of their illness, that the
person actually believes all of the things he might say to you while
ill (an interesting thing is that while ill I often said things that
sounded strange but DID NOT actually believe them, and was just trying
to convince people they were true, which they seemed to by playing
along) and that everyone with schizophrenia is violent or mad
(although obviously it is fine to have some people with these opinions
in the film it should not make out that they are correct)
Try to understand what the person would be like if the mental illness
side wasn't there, and then be that real person, but with the
schizophrenia on top - rather than defining the person as a
schizophrenic and that he actually is his illness and that is the only
thing about them.
Can I ask where this film will be broadcast, is it for TV or DVD or
cinema or for a festival or event or for the internet?

Hi CW,
You're absolutely right that it will depend largely on the script. That
being said, however, I feel like I have some breathing room -- if I see
something in the script that directly conflicts with the realities of
schizophrenia, I'll have an opportunity to change it -- and that's what
I'm aiming for now.
You are absolutely right about acting as a real person with the
schizophrenia on top. Thank you so much!
Oh -- and this is a festival film. I'll be able to tell more about it
as we go on with the production.
Have a great day, CW, and thanks again for all of your advice.

Well, one thing I can say is, you say you will be playing a
disorganized sz -- well, see, most if not all of the people who post
here are really high-functioning types, probably of the paranoid
variety. I don't know a lot about disorganized sz people myself,
except talking to them you would hear a bunch of stuff like "word
salad" and so on. I think it would be hard to portray a disorganized
sz. The suggestion of staying up for a few days sounds good.
I have to wonder about the movie itself -- if having a disorganized sz
will portray sz as different than it is for a lot of people like
paranoid or residual types.
Disorganized types...hmm. It would be hard to find out about them here
probably. |

Hi Jason, welcome.
-I apologize if this is the wrong group for me to post this in.
This might not be the best place for your inquiry.
Places like schizophrenia.com or contacting NAMI might be better.
You are a stranger amounst a bunch of paranoid schizo's.
I would guess 8 out of 10 of us are suspecious that your not genuine.
It has nothing to do with you and everyting to do with our paranoia
and the "wild" nature of this location on the internet.
-I'm in a bit of a situation here, however, and I'm really looking for
some advice from you posters here.
I'll give you one thing, you got my wheel's turning, so I'll reply.
-I'm an actor, see, and I've very recently been given a role as the
main
character in a film. The film highlights this character's life and
trials as a Disorganized Schizophrenic.
what a twist of fate, here we are as a group trying on a daily basis
to act normal, and some actor comes here wanting to be sz. No
offence, but if I was casting, i'd pick a real schizo to portray the
part. That's because no amount of reading or research can fully convey
what we go through in terms of ideation, and daily struggles. It's not
your shortcoming as an actor. It's just a complete lack of
understanding. Most times I don't think the Pdocs understand what we
go though and they deal with us daily.
-I've been reading almost non-stop for the last little while trying to
get a hold on exactly what a disorganized schizophrenic is and what
they experience but to this point I've found mostly medical
documentation and not too much actual perspective from someone with
the
illness.
I was going to say it depend what type of sz(short for schzophrenia)
your going to be.
It'd be pretty simple to portray a catatonic. I'm not familiar with
the disorganized type, I'm from the all-to-common paranoid flavor.
Some days I'm disorganized, but if I want I can organize very complexe
things. I'm not sure what qualifies one for a "disoraginzed" dx.
This also is not a good place to study us. In my opinion, most here
are very high fuctioning and are only a small sample of us. I suspect
someone who is severly affected by disSZ wouldn't be on usenet.
-I really want to accurately portray this character -- I don't want to
add to the misinformation of Schizophrenia.
As someone else said, this is very script dependant.
There is a big difference between an undiagnosed untreated, versus
someone with decades of recovery under their belt. Let me tell you
that that's as different as day and night.
I'm not sure how to convey life pre-dx. Going from a normal young
go-getter to a full blown acutely psychotic sz was a long process for
me. It's highly personal, and to be honest I can't describe how it
happened.
It started with small things, small associations that normal people
wouldn't make. That led to delusions, throw in some highly mystical
experiences. (like have god dictate a letter to you.)
These delusions, based on highly suspect associations, and some
interesting hallucinations.
Led to some "odd" behaviors that others slowly started to get noticed.
My favorite, was I was outside my office at work on a smoke break. A
truck pulls up and stops. I have no idea why he stopped. In my mind
however he was there to pick me up to take me to an important meeting
with the governemnt and the aliens. So naturally I get in the truck.
The guy looks at me like I have three eye-balls. (thank God I don't
live in a big city with people with guns.) His look shook me back to
some "objective" reality and I apologized for making a mistake. I told
him I thought he was someone else. Then proceeded to go back to work
and await my next mission.
Life as a psychotic is full of events like these. A simple way I like
to describe it is a psycotic is living in their own reality and it's
only somewhat similar to the reality everyone else lives in.
Life after treatment is totally different. You may still have
delusions and hallucinations, but thanks to medications and experience
these may not lead to an episode. We have learned how to manage and
cope with our extra experiences.
If you plan on portraying a sz in treatment on medications you may
want to put on 50-60 extra pounds. We do.
(PS to all - I lost 10 lbs after I switched from zyprexia to the
generic.)
-And so I ask for your help. Please, alt.support.schizophrenic, if you
have any advice for me (any form is perfect. I'd also like to hear
your
stories about how the illness has effected you) I would be forever
grateful for your efforts.
Find someone with the exact dx you plan to portray that is open to
discussing their life and experiences, and sit down and talk to them a
few times for a few hours. I'm sure a real life example would go a
long way. AND if you find this person, make sure you compensate them
appropiately. You wouldn't work for nothing would ya?
I could tell you all about paranoia which is the BIGGEST thing I have
to deal with, but that's not the dx for this character.
-Have a great week, everyone.... and my sincere apologies again if I'm
posting this in the wrong group or if my post is considered rude..
You should be thankful you got any meaningful reply's. Your not the
first actor here.
Most people wanting info about us are for the most part ignored.

Is that the intro to an Elvis song? I can hear a deep male voice
singing de-do-do-do...and then Elvis comes in over the top..."Hey
baby..." he sings all the while he is harmonising with the backup
singers. |

You might look for a documentary that shows some people with that variation.
Also, your director might know of an existing film (fiction) that portrays
it as he wants. However, anything from Hollywood is probably not accurate.
The movie "The Mechanic" does a good job of representing a paranoid, but
that is the wrong type. |

The best representation of what it's like that I have seen is an
obscure movie called "Clean, Shaven". But it has one sequence that's
not watchable it's so disturbing.

I have paranoid sz and I'm a very nice person even when I am totally out
of my mind. My main problem is with voices and paranoia.
My hygeine is always excellent. You probably wouldn't be able to tell
that I have sz.
In group therapy there was a man with disorganized schizophrenia. He
was able to drive a car, his hygeine was good but he didn't make any
sense at all. He would make comments in the group totally unrelated to
the topic at hand and when he talked no one knew what he was talking
about, word salad type.
good luck with your movie

The main thing is not to make eye contact with other people. And make
sure the make-up people get the proper shade of dark circles under
your eyes. Remember the main motivation of a schizo is stress
avoidance. This may seem like a truism since even normal people want
to avoid stress. Emotional stress seems to be most poisonous to
schizophrenics and one bad experience can send him into a downward
spiral of paranoia and hallucinations. As far as ill, hallucinating
schizoes go, they are mostly basket cases, make no sense, are
extremely hyper, get distracted easily, etc. Hope this helps.

Always wear different coloured socks. Actually, pretend that you've
taken lsd but also try to pretend that you are absolutely normal but
you aren't pulling it off... Or... Pretend to be a wierd alien/demon/
angel/fantasy-character pretending to be a human being... Yeah thats
kinda what its like... And your delusions are important to, they shape
your behaviour patterns... Absurdity wrapped in pretend normalcy...??? |

Here is a trailer for a really good film on schizophrenia that might
give you some ideas: http://youtube.com/watch?v=A7c-jpoIqxE
Also go to http://www.cuttingforstone.com and see the trailer for a
film called Walter. |

I believe this guy successfully portrayed a schizophrenic.

Try eating at a few soup kitchens.
Visit a walk in day center for the psychiatrically disabled.
Most of us live in the hospital.
We take up more beds then heart or cancer patients combined.
So.....just being here means we are "high functioning".
Doc told me once I was highly adapted.
Look for some documentaries at PBS archivs.
You gotta SEE it.
Most sz folk have major issues with organiing things and affairs, even
personl hgygene.
We smoke cigarettes disproportionately to the normal folk.
We easily misunderstand things.
Often you might see us at moments when we are lost in our internal
dialogues over something......DURING a conversation.
You gotta see.
"Book learning" won't help an actor be sz. |

| | | Re: Playing a Schizophrenic Are schizophrenics, generally, slobs? I have been in locked wards
and day treatment centers with my fellow schizophrenics for half a
century, but, perhaps due to the dopamine blockers, no schizophrenic
gets involved enough with other schizophrenics to see if they are well
organized or not, so that, I never saw a fellow schizophrenic's personal
posessions, except my cousin's, who is a "neatness freak" like me. I
have "an issue with organization" and that is to have everything
perfectly organized and neat to keep my head together.
But I must admit, I am dirty. My place is like Dracula's castle,
neat but dirty, with cob webs in every corner, but, I don't have any
skeletons hanging around. I even have to organize the world. I
catagorize everything under the catagories of the Pa Qua of Feng Shui.

The left line would be on top, and the right line on the bottom,
if I could convey those by WebTV. I organize my file drawer, and
everything else in my life, under this system. Everything in the
universe can be catagorized under one of these figures.
You may want to use this system. I am providing this system for
you so you can feel better, as it makes me feel better. I am sharing my
joy. If you want to start using this system, remember, "When
promulgating your esoteric cogitations, or articulating you superficial
sentimentalities, beware of immiscible philosophical observations". That
has been the theme of my personal life. |
