I can't remember if I told you this, but I used to suffer a great deal
from depression. It takes a while to kind of retrain yourself, so that
you don't hurt yourself with your negative thoughts. In my case,
cognitive therapy helped a lot, and learning about thinking errors. The
most difficult part was, and still is, applying what I learned, in order
to avoid falling into thinking error patterns.

Search google for thinking errors. There should be many sites with
relevant information.

The best way to help your depression is to change your lifestyle. I
used to be very solitary. It takes time to make good loyal friendships.
Good friends can help more than almost any therapist. You can usually
count your true friends on one hand.

This doesn't mean that I'm cured. It's a battle with myself, and for
myself. The volunteer work I'm doing is helping me refine myself in a
way. I noticed you were thinking of doing that too. I think it might
help you help yourself.

Major depression sucks. With one suicidal gesture under my belt, I
know. The good news is I got better by listening to my docs, telling
them what I thought, and taking my antidepressants and other
medications as directed.
