..wmv files are well-known for being shrimpy, although they tend to be
resultantly low-res compared to MPEGs. If you convert a MPEG to a .wmv you
normally go from 640x480 resolution, or even 800x600, to 240x180, but if
you're starting with an .avi you don't face that issue. .avi files are made
to mimic a normal (non-HD) television screen, which has a res of 240x180.
You might try going to
www.videolan.org and downloading vlcplayer. It can be
used to convert almost any format video or audio file into almost any format
video or audio file. Although the program is primarily intended for viewing
and broadcasting streams, there is a "stream to file" option that's fairly
versatile. Back when I had a TV tuner card I used vlcplayer to watch a TV
program on my computer at 1120x786 resolution while simultaneously recording
it at that resolution, and the pic was crystal clear both in the live view
and in the recording.
