| | | 10th anniversary May 26 2007 was my 10th stop-smoking anniversary. For years I had
wanted to stop, thought that someday somehow I would stop. Just not
right now. Too much to deal with now. But someday.
And so the years passed.
Then on May 26 1997 I stumbled across AS3. I read story after story
of people who had quit. People who had quit for years, people who had
quit for days, people who had quit for hours, people who were gearing
up to quit, people who had started smoking again, people who had
stopped again, people on the patch, people going cold turkey, people
tapering down, people arguing about how to quit, people praising each
other, people mocking each other, kind people, sarcastic people, sad
people, happy people, angry people, calm people. A whole universe of
people, all very different from each other, but all with one goal, to
stop smoking.
It was the variety, the honesty, the cussed humanity of this group
that tipped me over the edge from "someday" to "right now". As I
read I got excited. These are just ordinary people, yet many of them
have actually done it. And every last one of them is confronting this
issue not someday, but right here and right now. If they can do it,
so can I. So I threw away my cigarettes, threw away my lighters,
wrote my first post, and jumped into the fray.
That was ten years ago. I've had no cigarette since then.
Thanks, AS3.

Congratulations Drake! It worked the same way for me, and after I had some
time under my belt I knew I could not post that dreaded "I slipped" post. I
