The Nicodemon

He stood on my neck, a never ending presence, threatening agonizing
withdrawal pains and yet another failure as he screamed into my ear that
there was no chance, no chance in hell that I could ever live without him.

He whispered, "just one, cut down, smoke lights, tomorrow, next week, next
year... It will be ok, just give me your money, your health, your self
respect, the very air you breathe and maybe your life.

And I did. For 30 years I did. I gave and gave! I smoked hundreds of
thousands of cigarettes, I spent tens of thousands of dollars, I burned
cloths, floors, carpets, tables, myself and others. I did incalculable
damage to my body and I inflicted my stink and my smoke on those I loved and
those I didn't even know.

And theeeeen...

<SNIP> Here the editor chooses to remove yet another rendition of the
oft-told tale of the author's pains and anguishes and why he suffered more
than you did when you quit.

SKIP (in a manly way) FORWARD 8 YEARS:

The Nicodemon is not gone. He still lurks far, far away. a teeny tiny thing,
almost out of view, waddling along like an old, slow, wind-up toy that never
quite runs out of juice. He mumbles to himself.

Every now and then he walks a little faster and shouts to me as if he were
side-show barker, "Step right up, sir! Don't miss the show! First one's
free, Just one..." But his heart's not in it. He knows that once more I will
walk on, with only a slight smile at the husk-of-a-demon who was once so
mighty and fearful. He fades back into the distance, smaller, diminished
yet again. but I keep an eye on the bastard............................

Eight beautiful years, Les, and a beautiful message of winning the
hard-fought battle with our common enemy. We are all stronger for our
fight, and healthier for the hard months and years behind us. You are
right; we can never let down our guard no matter how many years go
by.

You have been a strong support here in AS3 all these years; you have
helped us, rooted for us, and cheered us on.

I salute you, Les the Great, Les the Wonderful, Les the Quitter in
Chief

Woo Hoo Les!!! I have been waiting for your posting all this week and
I was not at all disappointed. I agree the nicodemon DOES become a
side-show barker the longer we kick him in the cahones. Still, as you
write, he keeps on pushing his Just One because he knows he can trip
up folk that way. Your 8 years of kicking butt and saying NO is a
real inspiration for me and many others here! Thank you for staying
connected to the group and I look forward to seeing you add on more
and more time!

Now, do sit back and enjoy as the Original Yodeling Gnomes will be
arriving at your place in the morning with Horace, the Huffing Hogg,
to seranade you with morning music and freshly squeezed citrus juices
of your desire to help you celebrate this milestone!

Congratulations Les. Nice to see another milestone from another dissatisfied
customer. It is nice when that little basturd just whimpers a few pleas
because it knows that it's basically a waste of time, but we still need to
keep our guard up when we're vulnerable. Go Les!

Congratulations, Les!! I almost missed this because my reader has it
tacked onto someone else's 8 year post. I couldn't figure out why
there was such current response to Gregory Baxter's post of April 4th.
I think it's absolutely wonderful that you are still such a supporter
of those of who have come after you. Your 8 year post is a delight to
read. Glad I didn't miss it.

Thanks Marvin and THANKS for all you do for this group! By the way, I had
some goooood bread the other day. It was a "semolina sesame" loaf from a
bakery. I don't know anything about bread or baking. What is semolina? Is it
commonly used in bread? I don't know if it was just because it was fresh,
or I was just hungry or if really tastes different from other wheat... but
I know I'm agoin' back for some mo!
