Default *Article: Big Tobacco's Guinea Pigs

How an Unregulated Industry Experiments on America's Kids and Consumers
Source: American Lung Association

[Excerpt]This reports details how the companies manipulate their
products to recruit new youth users, create and sustain addiction, and
discourage users from quitting. It then describes the new generation of
tobacco products designed to achieve these goals.

Finally, it outlines how effective regulation by the U.S. Food and Drug
Administration (FDA), as exemplified by legislation currently under
consideration in Congress, can curtail the tobacco industry’s harmful
practices and save lives. Until the FDA is given such authority, the
American public will continue to be human guinea pigs in the tobacco
industry’s deadly science experiment.

Thanks for the link, Bev! Big Tobacco is as devious as the
addiction! May they both rot in hell!

Thanks, Bev. I have printed out the whole thing, running an eye over
it as it came out of the printer. I am going to read the whole bloody
thing. Not because I feel I might be in any danger of being seduced
by big tobacco, but because I want to know what lengths they will go
to in order to seduce more young people into their snares. I am
appalled by the flagrant colors of the packaging, the appeals to
youthful pleasures, etc., etc. Everything about their efforts is
repulsive.

I am ashamed that I spent so many years of my professional life
working for an ad agency and for an industry that supported the wiles
of Big Tobacco. Of course, I realize that advertising has been a big
factor in the success of many other businesses, and I applaud the FCC
for banning cigarette ads from television. But the blatant attempts
to lure youngsters into smoking are vile, and should be illegal.

I am going to punch holes in all 50 pages of this report and put them
into a looseleaf binder. I want to read this document slowly and
carefully. I want never to forget what big tobacco has done to all of
us. We have all been touched by this poison. My sons, by my
smoking. Me, by my father's smoking. And so on, and so on. I regret
all the years that I smoked. I consider myself very lucky indeed not
to have been sickened by my smoking.

Finally, I want to thank each and every one of you for helping me to
quit and to stay quit. You guys have saved my life.

Love you all,
Joyce

Awww ((((Joyce)))

With all the changes that each of us make to our lives (for the better)
in ridding ourselves of this vile addiction - we are always going to
have big tobacco looming in the background.

It was so much a part of the social media of our culture for so long -
that loosing its full impact will take generations. It is may always
loom like a slow moving poison that creeps in the back door so many
years later - we don't know what we contributed to the mutation - we
just know that there is potential, great potential for harm to us and
for generations to come. With that said...

I think that we each have to FORGIVE ourselves. There is nothing that
we can do about the genetic alterations that this has made to the gene
pool. NOTHING. The best thing that we can do is to remain informed,
stay strong, dedicated, and to know that by freeing ourselves from Big
tobacco today - we have set a positive and informed pattern for future
generations.

Perhaps education should begin during the formative years. Had we all
really known the deep ramifications of our addictions (at the time when
information was secreted away) - we may have opted for a different path.
But that was back when Big tobacco could casually pedal and enable such
a horrific addiction by claiming entire families, neighbors, and myriad
social arenas...It became part of the social fabric of our time and our
legacy.

I commend you for 12 years of non-smoking and for being such a backbone
of this group. When I think of "Joyce" - I think of security, safety,
and sanity. You are the Big 3 S of AS3.

Much love to you
x0x00x
/Bev
