What a lovely idea. Although I won't participate in this way I do
give to Salvation Army. I save my change throughout the year and take
it directly to our local Army headquarters. Last year it was about
$40 and should be about that this year, too. It's easier for me to do
this than to actually find a kettle.
You probably didn't read the story of "my" cat, Fred, and I'm not sure
I ever told the "rest of the story". I shared a cat with the
neighbors to whom Fred technically belonged. I think he liked my
house better because I gave him canned food instead of the dry they
provided. I also have cushioned patio furniture. He spent a lot more
time at my house than theirs. Anyway, several months ago Fred got
sick and the neighbors weren't home so I took him to the vet. They
needed $200 down payment for his care which I gladly gave. He died
before the neighbors came home and the total bill was about $365. I
told the neighbors that I would split the bill with them more or less
and just gave them the bill for the balance. They absolutely insisted
on giving me the $200 because he was "their" cat. I didn't really
have the heart to tell them that he really wasn't their cat and tried
not to take the money but they continued to insist. So, I took the
$200 to the Salvation Army and explained that the donation was in
honor of Fred. I never told the neighbors.
Working in Social Services I refer lots of people. That's why I
prefer that my donations be direct to the local outfit. Also, one of
my co-workers has just been appointed to the board.
Good luck with your endeavor.
