Default champix

Hi All

My girlfriend has been taking champix for nearly 2 weeks now but was
supposed to quit smoking after a week. She is really struggling to quit
though as if the champix is not having an effect.

We have just moved into our first house together last week and it was very
stressfull for us both. I think this would probably make it more difficult
for her to quit and now were settled she might get on a bit better.

Does anyone have any experience with champix not working correctly ? Is the
hype surrounding the drug making it more difficult for people to quit. What
do you guys think ?

I think it is with anything if you aren't ready to do the real work and stop
smoking nothing will work. It is not a magic pill it's a tool.you have to
want to quit.

I totally agree with Lynn, Mike. I used Chantix this time around and
I could nearly be a poster boy for it's success. But the key factor
is the desire to be smober. Unless you have that going, the Chantix
can certainly make smoking a real wierd experience but it will not
keep you smober. If you have not surrendered and turned over your
addiction and admited you want smobriety more than anything, the quit
will be one of anxiety all the time as you keep vacillating on it
until the nicodemon finally wins out. Certainly moving is very
stressful but there is no right time for quitting as waiting for the
'right time' is yet another cop out.

Another thing is... if she feels like you are making her quit
smoking. It may make her resent you. Very hard on a relationship,
especially if you keep giving her a hard time.

I am not saying that is what is happening, but it is very difficult
for smoker/non-smoker relationships. I should know, until last week I
was in one.

I'd say...
Encourage her to continue taking the meds, suggest she come visit us.
Stay the hell out of her way. Pray.
I took it 20 something days before I quit.

Thanks Lynn, yeah I know it isnt a magic pill but the hype surrounding the
drug is allowing many people to believe it is.

I agree mike. It is kinda like a vicious circle. She is stressed so she
smokes and she is trying to quit but getting stressed out because she is
finding it so difficult.

Very funny you should say this heather because I would shamefully admit that
I am maybe puting too much pressure on her to quit. She even told me after
she lost her 3 month quit in march that she didnt want to quit but because I
wanted her to, thats why she was doing it. I do think i need to give her
more support and stop badgering. It is a difficult situation for the both of
us in our relationship.

The stuff helps but it isn't a magic pill.

I would suggest that you don't even mention the smoking, and if she brings
it up just smile, give her a hug, that kind of thing, and let it go.

The bottom line is this: if you want another person to change more than they
want to change themselves, you've already lost.

My husband badly wanted me to quit, and his 'reminders' made me feel
worse. Finally, I got to the point where I wanted to quit too...
unfortunatly that was 3 years later.

He stuck around.. thank goodness. Just be careful, its hard enough on
her. I am a bit biased though, since I was in her position.
