Oh yes, those are lung cookies! Not uncommon at all in the first couple
months of a quit. The cilia in your lungs are starting to heal and do their
job of cleaning out the goo and toxins they've been storing all your smoking
years. This phase won't last forever; and when it's over your lungs will be
much pinker!

Randy,
It's been almost 6 months for me and I still cough up that nasty stuff. It
is normal. Your lungs have stored so much shit, it's one way to get it out.
Sometimes, I would wear I am coughing up TAR.

Yup, be glad it's coming out. As always, if it makes you uncomfortable and
you
don't trust it, go see a doc.

Randy, many of us experience this as our lungs begin cleaning
themselves from the years of sucking gunk into them. It is disgusting
as you cough it up but be glad it's out of you and no longer doing you
more harm. I bet you are already noticing that you can breathe better
these days?

When I was smoking I coughed shit up constantly.
A couple of weeks into my quit I had a tickle in my throat.
I coughed and nothing came up.
It got my attention.
I had forgot what it felt like to cough an have nothing come up.
I've been waiting for this cilia cleansing thing, but it never came.

I am not sure whether to worry or not about this one.
I almost never coughed as a smoker. And now all I get is what you
described as a tickle in my throat.
The coughers have evidence their body is getting rid of the crap. What
about us? Is our cilia doing the job silently? Just pushing it up
slowly and throwing it over to the stomach? Are we *supposed* to
cough? It would be great if we had a pulmogolist here or if someone
knew one.

I never had the cough once I quit either, but I *did* get a nasty cold
sometime around my 3M mark, so maybe I just coughed it all up then?
What I *did* notice was that the nighttime WHEEZE that I developed
during my previous quit is completely gone now. It's so much nicer to
lay down and hear normal breathing again!

The breathing is much better. I also had a terrible cough when I was smoking,
in fact I passed out on two different occasions during a coughing frenzy.

Did you have to say That!? ;-) I'll never be able to look at cookies the same

Certainly! I do find it increasingly hard to find certain kinds of
information on the internet, because the majority of places copy each
other's information. So when you look for something specific, and
worse yet, they keywords are quite popular, you are in trouble.

Try searching for "benefits of quitting smoking" you will keep finding
the same old list we have here over and over and over again. I was
looking for the information that someone posted here, how the liver of
a smoker can only deal with a small portion of the toxins from a
shitstick, and stores the rest in fatty tissue. But I digress!

Wow I searched for cigarettes and liver.
The symtoms of liver detoxification sound like the complaints of
Chantix users.

like Anne said it is normal but if it is a different colour (green comes to
mind or blood in it) go get it checked out. you will notice little brown
flecks in it that is the nicotine coming out and it shouldn't last long. I
couldn't cough up a lugger if I tried now.

I had a productive tickle when I quit Tiho but many don't have anything. the
body just absorbs the crap and gets rid of it natually. ( ever have your
skin smell of garlic the day after having garlic bread?)
the next cold you get take notice of your cough and if it is productive,
what is the color, etc when I was smoking it was always black when I was sick
now it is always clear. the only real time to worry about the phelm is when
it changes colours (green or bright yellow) or has blood in it ( even then
it could just be a throat irration)

FWIW...I'm actually coughing up more now than I did in the early months
of my quit. Then again it is FLU season so maybe I'm actually sick???
Every night I spend 10 minutes or so doing deep breathing exercises. I
only take 1 breath a minute while I'm doing them and it feels FUCKING
GREAT to be able to hold my breath that long, last year I would have
collapsed and died if I couldn't breathe every 15 seconds.
Working on 2 minutes between breaths....and then I breathe through my
ears....LOL

Nice thinking! I still wonder whether I should be worried by a
complete lack of coughing or not.
