Don't worry. Your fingernails will grow back once oxygen starts reaching
them again. I was amazed how much stronger my nails were after I quit.

Ok then
You are counting down to quit day, lets not get the cart before the
horse, just untwist them there knickers a minute will ya. This thing
you are about to do is one of the best things in life you can do for
yourself. You are not giving UP something, you are giving yourself
your god given right to FRESH,COOL, CLEAN, AIR. Once you quit you will
be able to breathe in and you will think you are never gonna stop.
Being nervous is natural but don't worry, read around here a bit see
how many trail blazers have gone before you. You can do it, sure there
will be good days and bad days but YOU CAN DO IT ! Take those days one
day at a time, some quitters have split it down to hour by hour to
begin with. Oh and stop biting those nails !
Good Luck

Oh my, oh wow! Inky... I've sort of been lurking here the past few
weeks (not very well or I would have seen your intro), I've not set
a quit date yet: haven't got a doc appointment yet either, I'm
expecting a Pdoc call.
For the nails, you could buy one of those nail shiner things: you
can make (what's left of) your nails look nice and polished while
keeping your hands busy.
I can't recall if you hyperventilate? I do and evil ciggies *seem*
to help regulate my breathing quickly. At the pain clinic
(rehabilitatie centrum) one of the other "customers" had this
gadget to breathe into when hyperventilating and I've been looking
into getting one for my attempt. The only example I could find
online was the "Hyperfree" which should cost ± € 11,30: http://www.kring-apotheek.nl/zz/zz16.html (Dutch link)
I've also remembered what I used for during phone calls last quit:
Chinese exercise balls... and before anyone goes <ew!>, these are
they: http://www.themodernreligion.com/health/balls.html
Basically a pretty good fidget tool plus you can roll them at
people in a threatening manner if the mood should strike you.<eg>
You can do this Inky, and I'll be following your path soon enough,
ok? Way to go Inky! :-) |

good idea, anything that keeps your hands and brain occupied will work. i
started juggling balls (soft ones are best) there's no way that you can
think of anything else while trying to keep three balls in the air! so i
also learnt a new skill.

I'm *sooo* glad you qualified that! I'd hate to think of the amount
of damage I could do with those Chinese things otherwise.<g>

Sounds like fun too. :-) |

| | | Re: Counting down one of the main reasons i used the soft ones was because i have people
living on the floor below and i don't think they'd appreciate hard balls
dropping on the floor all the time. i practice contact juggling now and
that has to be a hard ball so it's social hours only until i drop it five
times then i stop!
i think it helped knowing that i was getting something out of it. all comes
back to this crazy idea that when you quit smoking you loose something (well
you loose a few things but they're all bad) so i made an effort to gain
things like the juggling and going to the gym etc. i kind of think that if
you're going to turn your life around you need to start doing things so that
you can see results!
funny thing is that although i thought about the Chinese balls i never got
round to trying them out!
best wishes

Go away Vashti, he's Mine!! MUHAHAHAHA! Anyhow, so much for tuesday,
gone before you notice it. Yep, I do hyperventilate but.. how about
inhaling clean air instead of smoke filled? :P I can take a deep
breath anytime (if I'm not too afraid to. :F )
Eh, today, when I kissed my son goodnight, I told him it wasn't gonna
smell that bad anymore after I quit.. His eyes almost rolled out of
it's sockets then I saw a little gleam in his eyes. Them sweeties are
already so proud of me, just because I'm preparing (they're still
for sale tho.. <veg> )

What?! You have your own juggler??? (trade you a banjo player?<g>)

Yeah, what was with that? Last thing I knew it was Monday evening
and then *whoosh!* here comes Wednesday!

It's just mid-panic that I have trouble getting my breathing under
control, and that's one time I'm likely to reach for the smokes. I
think the 11 euros would be well worth it if that gadget actually
helped. Clean air sounds good as a concept right now but--- ah, I
need to get the coping stuff in place properly first this time,
right?

Aww... I know mine will be right terrors (and rightly so): they
won't *let* me buy more tobacco once I quit. I can just imagine 'em
coming home from school and smelling my hair just to "check".

Hmm... two kids, yes? I've already got two boys but there's room in
the er- spare cellar and spare shed? :-P

I looked up juggling web pages a few years ago, that was probably
around the time of my last quit when I was looking for "fidgets".
Know what you mean about the noise and neighbours: my neighbour
didn't appreciate my flipping (ok- *dropping* when I started) my tv
remote every evening.

Yup, it's not just money: it's health, feeling good emotionally and
physically... looking 20 years younger!<j/k> The gym is out for me
but my local pool has a daily set time for people with physical
impairments to do relaxed swimming and water therapy without noisy
kids. I don't see myself going daily but quitting smoking will more
than pay for twice weekly visits.

Wellll... you just sort of roll 'em around in your hand clockwise
and counter-clockwise.<g> It's quite soothing really but you need
to watch out not to start out doing it for half-hour stretches of
time. That way lies pain. |

| | | Re: Counting down oops! Good day to quit! I will be cheering for you! I started planning
my quit in March 2006, I quit in November 2006, and gained weight
*before* I quit from the stress of thinking about it, 15 lbs maybe?haha.
