Default Did you miss me??

I'm BAAAAAAAAAACK from the chilly wilds of Alaska. Had an absolutely
lovely time. They just about had to drag me off the ship kicking and
screaming, and I just about cried all the way home.

Now: Losing all the weight I put on on that cruise ship. Good Lord,
I've never seen so much food. All I did was eat!

Since I promised Marvie and the rest of you, I took loads of pictures.
More than 460, in fact. But they're beautiful and spectacular and well
worth the time it will take you to slog through them all, if you're
interested. If not, pick and choose. Or bypass them entirely.

For those of you on Facebook with me, I've posted a sample album there
with 30 pictures. But here is the whole enchilada, nicely broken up
into separate albums:

http://picasaweb.google.com/hermitcrabby

Enjoy!

My wife and I did the Alaska cruise back in July '01 (before I quit
smoking!). It got cold and rained too. I'd love to do that again!
Thanks for posting the pics Ashley!

All good things come to an end!
I always think of Alaska as a dreary, rainy, muddy place, and that's in
summertime! But I knew they do cruises there so maybe I have an
erroneous mental picture. Ruth Rendell set one of her murder stories
partly on a cruise there, I think it was called Sight for Sore Eyes.
I've sampled two cruises: exactly 3 years ago, I took the Queen Mary II
from NYC to Southampton, spent two weeks in Britain, then sailed from
Southampton to NYC and flew back here.
The food was super on that ship, and I found about seven bars, there
may have been more!
Last October, I went to Hawaii, mainly to tour Pearl Harbor.
That was on the Princess Diamond, and I thought it inferior to the QMII,
to be honest; the food wasn't as good and was often less than piping
hot when it arrived at my cabin. The sound insulation between cabins
was not at all effective, and I could clearly hear the couple on one
side. He had an irritating habit of saying Hrrrnnnn? in response to
many of the wife's remarks - I'd have thought this would have been
grounds for a divorce or justified violent murder with a blunt
instrument but evidently she had got used to it.
The husband on the other side of my cabin was quieter but he smoked
cigars and out on the balcony the odor drifted out and then into my
balcony. He had a shocking bad cough, a real rasping smoker's cough.
The cabin was slightly smaller than the QMII one.
Some of the staff, who came from all different countries: Philippines,
South America, Goa, etc, told me a lot of the American passengers were
incredibly overweight and some had to get about in little electric
trolleys. And they were eating three meals a day in the dining room, and
calling down for snacks in their cabins too!
Significantly, on the trip three years ago, you could smoke in all the
bars, I believe, but on the Princess Diamond last year, only 2 or 3
allowed smoking, and I was told by one of the staff this was now the
case on the QMII.

Woo Hoo Ashley! Thank you for a sweet hour of looking through your
photos and getting a better appreciation of the Northwest portion of
our continent. But I am curious, where you there before you-know-who
became you-know-what?

I was there just after you-know-who was named you-know-what. But
honestly since I wasn't working I did my damndest to ignore it. I only
spoke to one Alaskan about it, and he said he really wasn't much for
politics anyway and didn't know much about her, only that most people
he knew didn't have a problem with her.

Ian, it's funny you should say that -- I actually noticed an
inordinate number of grossly obese people on the cruise. A fair number
of them were indeed using those little electric scooters.

Glad y'all liked the pictures.

Don't think I saw that one.
I found the rec.travel.cruises n/group helpful; one of my questions to
the veterans in there was, of course, is smoking permitted on board?
The Princess line is particularly sensitive about it because they
apparently had a blaze in a cabin, said to have been caused by someone
getting drunk and falling asleep with a cigarette smouldering in his hand.

I was thinking of you but knew you would have a great time. I am glad to
hear that you did have a great time. I guess you never wanted to end this
time. Didn't the food tasted so much nicer as a non smoker? and just the
fact that you didn't had to get up from the table to fit your addiction
makes the trip even better.

Just in that same vein, we were on Holland America, and in our little
"how-are-we-doing" questionnaire we filled out before getting off,
there was a sheet of paper inserted in there asking us if we smoked,
and if we would cruise again on Holland America if they banned smoking
in public areas of the ship, and if they banned smoking all over the
ship, including staterooms. Looks like they're thinking about it.

Generally, I have no objection to people smoking anywhere but ships
are a special case: all seafarers dread a fire at sea above all else.

We didn't, actually. We went up to Juneau, then up to Hubbard Glacier,
so we went in the other direction from Haines and Skagway. Then we
stopped in Sitka and Ketchikan.

I was sad that I might be missing your friend. Or at least her ass.

Wow nice pictures Ashley, looks like you had a whale of a time I'm
going to Spain (off the beaten track) for a week in a bit so I will
take some pictures and share with you all.
