| | | Doctor visit Went to see my doctor yesterday; it was just my normal semi-annual
check-up. When he listened to my chest, he pronounced it "very
clear." I said, "Well, it should be. I haven't smoked in 10 years
and 7 months."
He laughed, but he was pleased that I had stayed quit for that long.
Everything else is fine, too. I also told him that I was doing water
exercise and weight training twice a week to strengthen these antique
bones, so I might one day be able to leave the cane at home.
That reminded him that I should have a bone density test soon.
He's a good doctor and I am pleased that I found him when I really
needed his kind of care. He is an endocrinologist and I first
consulted him because I was tired all the time. Turns out I had
become hypothyroid, which accounted for the fatigue and a few other
things I had barely noticed. Up untll that time I had not had regular
check-ups. Just so busy working, keeping house, raising two sons,
etc.,etc. And smoking. So ever since that time I see him every six
months, primarily to check my thyroid levels, but all the other ills
that flesh is heir to. When there is something else, he immediately
refers me to the appropriate doctor.

That is really good, Joyce. and they say that after 10 years, a lot of
your risk factors are as low as non-smokers. I'm glad you have a
doctor that you like. That can be difficult to find.
Annette Nicotine free for six months, three weeks, two days, 14 hours, 37
minutes and 15 seconds. 2066 cigarettes not smoked, saving $361.49.

Yeah...... I quit smoking 'cause I wanted to improve my health.
Seems that's imopossible without a good doctor's participation. |

David, I really didn't mean that I had my doctor's participation from
the very beginning of this quit. I didn't. Oh, I would mention it to
him from time to time, and I think I mentioned AS3 to him once as a
huge motivating force for me from the get-go. He didn't seem very
impressed with that as a quit method. But I figured that was because
AS3 is kind of a home-grown operation. We all just gather together
and do the job. No doctor's required. I did not expect him to
recommend it to his other patients.
So please believe that you can quit smoking with or without your
doctor's participation. Just look around this group. As for me, I
didn't mean to say that it was necessary.
What you can believe is that the benefits to your health when you quit
smoking are very real and I am a living, breathing example of that.
Put the emphasis on the breathing part. I take full credit for that.
You can too.

I wasn't suggesting you need the doctor's participation to quit
smoking (but I do recommend it).
I was applauding you and your doctor working together to continue
improving your health after quitting.
I quickly learned that quitting smoking did not fix my heath.
It was the first step in the process of my learning to take proper
care of myself.
Hope that sounds like I mean it. |

Good advice for everyone Joyce. I know that every time I've told a
doctor (whatever kind) that I had quit X years ago, they've always
started smiling and nodding their heads. They usually mention that
whatever I was currently ailing would be a lot worse if I was still
smoking. I suspect that they are right. Congrats on the 10 years.
You've always been a kind inspiration to me.

Hi Joyce
Glad to hear you are doing well
In no way is the following meant to be ageist, I don't know how old
you are and I do not want to offend you.
I read this a bit back about the great effects staying hydrated http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/7466457.stm
Since then I have made an effort to drink more water and my mum is as
full as a blimp
