| | | DOF Speech What do you say when its been two years without our old best friend and master Cigs
and Nick? Not too much except that I couldn't have done it without AS3 and every one
of you. I guess I'll make a specific notice to everyone since I have not been able to
post this last year, I wanted to but couldn't, except on Google which I hate and
refuse to use, its like taking a bath with your socks on (if you know what I mean).
It feels really great to not be smoking. I did a show today for a AA recovery center,
and as usual there were a lot of AA's steadily sucking on cigarettes all the time we
were there. But it felt great not really wanting one this time, unlike shows in the
past when I was ready to sneak off in a minute and go smoke.
Oh, and I can't remember the last cigarette any more. I do remember SMOKING, staring
off in the distance and just collecting my thoughts, but I can still do that today
without the huffing and puffing.
For your benefit I will repost some old speeches in case you care to relive these
moments; some interesting stuff in there.
Thank you guys, and keep on hanging on. The next milestone will be DOF HOF which is
the point I resumed smoking back in 1998, so lets keep going.
All the best to all of you. I;m posting a bit early since it looks like I will not be
able to make the party tonight.

One Year, Eleven Months, Thirty Days, 20 Hours and 48 Minutes; I have gladly notsmoked
19003 cings, saving more than $4,896.22, and adding 65 Days and 23 Hours to my life,
although it should possibly be more since it's a non-linear function.

I think I can still remember that last fag. Well, believe it or not I'd still like a
cigarette. Or, Keven, at least that's what part of me says, but I know better. I
still get slammed by dreams and the odd crave every now and then, but I'm not letting
this one go. Its a humbling thing to drive (not smoking) to the tubs, I have done
this before, but this time the stakes are much higher.
It was a year ago today that I decided to give it another try and stop smoking, and
now Cat says I was the top poster for 2006 (somehow I doubt it still, Robin is got to
be ahead of me. At least I never got flamed, but I did make a spoof on Jef's site).
My family was out of town, in Spain, just like they are this year so I thought I'd try
it and get the withdrawal out of the way while they were gone. I'd tried that before
but this time was going to be different. I was too painfully aware of my last quit
back in '95 using AS3, which lasted 2 1/2 years, and some ill-fated and half-hearted
attempts back in 2003 which you can read about on dejanews.com
I'd made the decision that I would read and post no matter what and as often and for
as long as it took and what expense it would take, and that I did, for the first week,
which started the LTOW club, which PC, Astrog and and Steph were in, and Sue but at
that time I didn't know it, which morphed over the months into the SFB2's with its
cast of dozens, which were sometimes cheered on by the SFB's whom we got to know
later. The posting continued throughout the entire 2006 period as I tried to get some
time on my meter. New guys: try it, it will work for you too!
Thanks to eveyone here who made this such a successsful quit. I am saddened in
reviewing the posts from back then to see who is no longer around. I am deeply
saddened at the loss of my best quitbuddy ever. I am sorry to have missed the Chicago
meet. I am grateful to everyone's humor and patience and ranting and support. I am
so happy to see the octonobutts and the 007's and the new Feburaries and all the new
VOF's taking such a commanding role in the group at this time.
All of you know who you are, the ones that made this so enjoyable and such a
life-giving place to be for so long, please accept my thanks.

"On top of everything else I was hiding my smoking. So you can only use the 'just
stopped' excuse with strangers.... "
HANG IN THIS GROUP IT IS A LIFE-SAVER!
Well, its been since 1995 that I was in this group. I quit in July 1995, and later
diagnosed with CLL in 1996 (see Leukemia support groups), and still didn't smoke. My
mom (TOF), had just been Dx'd with Athsma, and we joked, "lets go out and get a carton
of cigarettes and smoke 'em!" (Just a joke!)
I wrote to the group my agonizing experiences at the 3-month timeframe, and later
ones. I corresponded with several of you now OF's and it was very supportive.
So I started again in January 1998. They must have found out and taken me off the
quitlist but you can still find it on dejanews. And made several half-hearted
attempts since then. In 2002 I underwent 6 months chemo for the CLL, and after the
4-day long 9-hour infusions, I just couldn't wait to get home so I could send my wife
out on some contrived trip to the store so I could FINALLY have that first cigarette
of the day (at 4pm!). She actually thought I was unappreciative of her helping me
thru chemo, I was just dying for a cigarette, that's all.
I stopped again in July 2003 in the mountains of new mexico where I quit for the first
time in 1995; it felt great, etc. I remembering thinking as the last few cigs were
disappearing that I could go to the store (a 2-hour excursion) and get 2 packs, but
then I thought I could get 10 packs, or I could get 1000 packs. So I quit.
Taking long drags off my little wooden stick was helpful, as were the longs drags off
the long screw I also had, for a little more oral stimulation. But, within 18 hours
of back in the hustle bustle traffic mess in Houston, I got my first pack (after my
3rd CIGAR).
So now I have to set another quit date. I have to do something death-defying. There
is no stress-free time since, since, well, it couldn't be more stressful now let's
say. (All sorts of homestatic needs unmet). So I'm thinking before or after the big
gala with Cheney and James Baker where I know I can sneak out and smoke?
A little help would be appreciated. |

Yes, I do.

You sure were paying more for cigs than I was. I have about $7 to go
to reach $4000 savings but I've not smoked coming on to 24,000 (a
number that amazes me).

| | | Re: DOF Speech Woo Hoo Jad! I was glad to see your name jump over into the DOF list
this week and am glad to see you posting! I do look foward to seeing
you get to DOF HOF and beat that mark to make this quit your longest.
I have to get past 3+ years to say that, but I do know one day at a
time I am getting there.
Now, do sit back and enjoy as the Original Yodeling Gnomes are heading
your way with Horace the Huffing Hogg to sing songs of smobriety to
help you celebrate this milestone!
