Default First my dad now my mother in law

We lost both in less than a month. How much more can a person handle?
Gussie ( not short for anything) died this morning. She was 83 and the
funniest lady you ever met. the last few years alzheimers her away. She
taught me how knit socks and those phentex slippers my nana used to make me,
and I have her peony plant. Scott found a small root a couple of years ago
when the his dad tilled up her flower garden and thinking it was a rhubarb
root took it home.
They just celebrated their 62 Th wedding anniversary 3 weeks ago .

In a sense you were both fortunate ladies. Not all mother-in-laws and
daughter-in-laws get on.
Do hope wonderful memories help to compensate for your loss.

Lynn, I am sorry to read of your MIL's demise as well. You mentioned
alzheimer's. My mom died from it and she was mostly checked out long
before her body did. It was sad knowing how vibrant she had been.
But yes, you do have memories and fun shared times to recollect on and
there will be things you will be reminded of her as you run across
them.

Hugs,

thank you all,
Cat, dad and her shared some wicked stories when they both were alive. I
remember once her telling dad about the time she made beet wine and for
days she thought she was dying because she was peeing red. this tickled dad
greatly because he used to make his own googlie juice ( shine). they got
along famously

I never looked at her as being a mother-in-law but more of a grandmother
mostly because she was so much older than my folks and she never poked her
nose into anything but she was extremely funny. once she had me sitting on
the side of the road with my legs crossed trying not to pee myself laughing
because this little ol lady who wasn't even 5 feet tall who you'd swear
butter wouldn't melt in her mouth called someone a cocksucker.
The only time I heard her swear and she came up with this!

She was the only person who could but father-in-law in his place and she
made him wait until she was ready to leave. He was/is always in a hurry and
a few times he would be in the car with the engine running and she would sit
at my table and slowly finish her coffee then go to the bathroom, I remember
getting anxious for her in the beginning and she would shrug and say " what
is he going to do? leave without me?"
hahaha she had a spark
that spark died a few years ago with the dreaded disease.
there is no funeral, no wake, no obit, no minister, but she was laid out at
home the day she died for immediate family to say goodbye I am not really
sure who idea that was but I can guess, so I am sharing a couple of memories
with you all.
thanks for listening

I self-protectively tend to avoid threads about such losses, having had them
in batches myself, but happened to wander into this one this morning and
just wanted to say, I'm sorry. Take care of yourself.

A little over two years ago, I held hands during my mother's graveside
service with my mother's best friend of over eighty years. The following
week, her husband died. Imagine losing your best friend and then your
husband within the span of a week. She looked like she was made out of
stone while they played "Taps" for this WWII veteran -- in the rain -- and
presented her with the flag.

I have a picture of her standing with my mother on the beach next to the
chair where I do my needlework. When her husband and my father were in
WWII, my mom and her friend took countless photos of each other to send to
their husbands in Europe. I and my best friend growing up, her daughter,
have albums full of them.

Take care of yourself. I didn't do a very good job of doing so, myself. We
all just muddle through somehow.

ep oooooooof
