| | | Fuck Up of All Time....but not any more Well people I'm going to throw in my bid for being for many years the Fuck
Up of All Time. Lets see I started smoking about 1970 when I was 12 I knew
it was no good for me by 1975 when I was playing Rugby Union so I tried to
stop and managed 10 months I smoked then till I was abround 23 I got double
pneumonia and managed to say off them for about 3 weeks yep 21 whole days
plus or minus then in 1984 my wife to be and still is suggested it would be
good for me to stop so I did for about 5 months by the way we are in 1984
now. During 1986 I had my first run in with PTSD and depression I managed
to give away drink but not cigs. So from there until 16 March 2005 me and
the nickodemon had a hate hate relationship. Now the moral of this story is
that it was december of that year that the PTSD and Clinical Depression gave
me a worout bigtime but I never reached for a smoke however no lozenge, gum
or patch was safe anywhere near me. The bottom line now is I am still mad
but happy with the help of my medication and moderate to heavy exercise. AND
I DON'T SMOKE CIGARETTES. So if you can better a 30 year on and off again
relationship with the Nicodemon then have a tilt at the crown.
( PTSD is Post Traumatic Stress Disorder- from going where no man is meant
to go, doing what no man is meant to do, seeing what no man is meant to see
and hearing what no man is meant to hear and getting up in the morning and
doing it again) ' I use "man" as non gender specific as some wonderful
ladies I worked with are in the same boat'

Well done sir! You've tried and failed, and each failure must have made
the grip the nicotine fiend had on you more strong. Now you've kicked it
off - post and read inhere, and you can beat the bastard for good and
all.
Unlike you , I smoked heavily for almost fifty years and never seriously
considered stopping. Real stupid, it seems now, looking back.
And surprise surprise I now have emphysema and get out of breath just
doing things I used to do with no problem.

It's not "on and off again" any more.
You have moved on to take the next hill.

What an inspiring post! What an agony that whole serial quitting and
relapsikng is! I think I'd better just stay quit no matter how tough
it can be in the fleeting moments when it is tough!

PS I know exactly what you mean about being able to give up drinking
but not cigarettes. I had put together a serious quit in 2006 only to
blow it on these god-awful no-nicotine cigs, and realized my 10 year
sobriety date was approaching. I knew there would be a fair amount of
hoopla surrounding that, and I realized I just didn't feel like a
sober person - spirituatlly, emotionally - if I were still smoking.
So I pulled this (god help me) last quit out about 3 weeks before the
anniversary, and genuinely celebrated in style. Why is it so much
harder that stopping drinking? Drinking doesn't haunt me at all, and
cigarettes still can. Well I guess the important thing is that I
don't do either any more and neither do you! Congatulations to us on
double victories! Stephanie |
