| | | I Took the Stairs Today! Because I could. I work on the third floor and I always take the
elevator because two flights of stairs leave me winded...make that
"left" me winded. That was when I smoked. Which I don't anymore!
This has been a good quit. I'm glad you folks are here.
Cheers,
Rob

Now there is some great news.
Here is an excerpt from an article in my local newspaper.
Something for all of us to think about.
--------------------------
Twice in recent times I wanted to walk somewhere, but people around me
objected. During a visit to relatives, I proposed walking to church --
three blocks away.
"Don't walk. We'll drop you off," they said Sunday morning.
"No, really, I want to walk."
"What if it rains?" they pleaded.
It was a crisp, fall sunny morning.
"I'll be leaving in 10 minutes."
The other was last month in Washington. I decided to walk from the
hotel to Union Station -- nearly two miles -- a nice break from sitting,
writing, conferring, networking.
"Nobody walks," the concierge said. "Take the Metro. It's right there.
You don't want to walk."
I thanked him, looked obligingly at the subway station, and walked.
Is there a prejudice these days against walking? The times seem
offended by the very idea of a stroll. Walking plays no evident role
in globalization. It's hard to spend money when you're walking. From
the heights of the economic fast track, walking looks tainted,
implying you can't afford a car (true, many people can't), or, worse,
you're in no hurry.
All this makes walking a small act of rebellion. The more idle the
amble, the better. But walking is no stunt. It can save your sanity
and remind you you're alive.
The 21st century trump-card argument for a daily walk, of course, is
it cuts down on pollution and promotes good health. But I won't even
bring them up. Walking is more practical and urgent even than that.
Walking is the transportation industry equivalent of writing longhand
-- a way to slow down your thoughts. It expands that underachieving
modern muscle, the attention span. Unplugged, off the grid (and try it
without cell phone or iPod), a walk fixes attention on life's
forgotten but enduring details -- the surface of the earth, the
neighborhood, one's own clumsy thoughts. Walking sharpens the senses.
Walking, even on a bad day, sends me in serenity's direction. It's
just around the corner.

getting smober, a great way to push yourself a bit. See about getting
a promotion a month though so that you can just add in more stairs.

walking places usually an adventure which I enjoy. Sure, when it's
cold I look like Nanookie of the North but I don't freeze and I get
there. Walking really does help you to clear your mind as you focus
on what matters as well as take in the sights and enjoy.

I'm with you guys.
I've been a pedestrian my whole life.
And have no aversion to stairs.
I'm a freak.
Here's what really makes me an outcast.
I don't interrupt what I'm doing, or who I'm talking to, to answer the
phone.
Good thing I quit smoking or I'd be banished from the human race. |

The aptitude to never walk is tipically American :-) I was in OH for
work and the only time I decided to go somewhere on foot, a police car
came by and asked me if I'd need some help :-)
Here in Europe walking around is quite normal... |

Rob - Good for you. I've gotten so lazy in my "old age" that I never
do anything strenuous anymore. I'm afraid I'll have a friggin heat
attack! I have high blood pressure (controlled), but TERRIFIC
cholesterol - all that alcohol, you know (works to control that "bad"
cholesterol)

Somebody says that there is an ``automobile addiction'' that affects
places and town, an not directly people, but people does not see this.
Have you seen the giant shopping center with a multilevel parking in
the middle of nowhere, except the motorway ramps? Have you seen
the office building without anything nearby except the drive-in
fast food? Have you seen the new mansions, in a dead-end road
without sidewalks, where the nearest grocery is two kilometers away
and the nearest bus stop is three kilometers away?
If you haven't a car, going and living on these places could be
worse than living on a mountain village. But these place are still
built and people flocks in, with their cars. | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
