Default I wish I could ...

Did you ever walk past a shop window and see something you *really* wanted,
but couldn't afford? Did you ever say to yourself "I wish I could have
that"? You could have had it, you know. Just smash the window and take it.
Morality aside, why didn't you? Well, you might get caught, mightn't you?
Then what would the consequences be? The shame of being in arrested, in
court, a fine or short term of imprisonment -- no, it would not be worth the
risk.

So it is when you have been quit for a while. From time to time you think "I
wish I could have a cigarette." But here the risk is much higher -- you're
gambling with your life. You know you couldn't stop at one, two or even a
whole pack. Looking to see if there are any cops around won't help you. It
doesn't matter that there are no surveillance cameras. It all depends on the
random biochemistry of the tars in your lungs or the fluid dynamics of the
blood in your narrowing coronary arteries.

So, no, you can't have it. You know that. You'll still find yourself wishing
occasionally, but just like with the goodies in the shop window you're going
to walk on by.

Very interesting and provocative post steve. It is similar to the quote on
this newsgroup last week about what someone would do if they knew they would
not get caught. I think this means that the more outside influences a person
has to warrant sticking to their quit, the more inclined they are to stay
quit. For example, having a baby would encourage a family to quit smoking
because it is having an effect on someone innocent.

Thanks, Steve. I still get that "just one" feeling but I resist and
will continue to do so.

Hi Steve, thanks for this post.

Every now and then, I think fleetingly, "Wow. I'd love to have a smoke
right now."
But then I have to say to myself, "Well, you might love it, but we
don't do that anymore. So sure, think about how nice it would be. But
then move on, 'cuz it ain't happening."

Thanks for the observation, Steve. It is SOOO on point and true. I
find the only time I get even a hint of that wish is when I'm around
smokers but that is not all that often anymore, thank goddess!

Those who don't read and post ain't around to find out what happens to
those who don't read and post.
I haven't smoked in 2 Weeks, 6 Days, 3 hours and 34 minutes. The TC and
the taxman didn't get $100.73 of my money. The TC gets to keep 402
sickarettes and I get to live an extra 1 Day, 9 hours and 30 minutes.
