Default I'm Back

I spent some time with this fine group a couple of years ago. Had a good
tobacco free run, can't remember why I started smoking the odd one again nor
how it got to every day all day again.

Anyway, I have a bad cough and it frightens me. I have some nicotine
lozenges. I have given away the spare packet I kept in the glove box. I am
going all the way this time.

One day, 10 hours, 39 minutes and 46 seconds. 17 cigarettes not smoked,
saving £3.90. Life saved: 1 hour, 25 minutes.

Yeah, that bad habit sneaks up on you like a mouse.
Got to be ready to clobber it with determination.

And quitting smoking is soooo good on getting rid of coughs.
Ask just about anyone here.

Way to go Tim!
I am back here with ya! Been doing some lurking here the last couple days.
Feels like home.
I know exactly how my smoking started back up and I have no excuses.
I, like you, have the bad cough and am tired of waking up smelling like a
stale cigarette. Gross.
My dh and I bought a house at the of June and I have not smoked in the
house. I feel like such an idiot running for cover from the elements to my
car. I have Febrezed my car now everyday I get in it.
Its a battle but we know what we have to do.
We go all the way....
No matter what we do not smoke.
Best wishes,
Susan H (formerly Susan S)
Four days, 19 hours, 46 minutes and 40 seconds. 72 cigarettes not smoked,
saving $13.75. Life saved: 6 hours, 0 minutes.

Ok, I'm really curious Tim and Susan. Why, after all that time DID you
start again? Was it at a party where you borrowed a smoke from someone
else? Or did you consciously buy a pack? What triggered it????
Curious mind really needing to know.

One week, five days, 8 hours, 46 minutes and 39 seconds. 247
cigarettes not smoked, saving $53.17. Life saved: 20 hours, 35
minutes.

Default Re: I'm Back

I did a lot of service work here and in aqss (the other newsgroup, much
quieter than here). I slowly started pulling away. Hindsight, that gave my
weak nicodemon strength, but I was not consciously aware of that then. I
lost a lot of weight at the same time and losing that weight, well I kind of
lost my mind. Felt like I was 20 again, on top of the world. I started a
second job at a yacht club working weddings, hard busting my azz work. My
first job was 8-4 in a doctors office. I would leave on Friday and be
humping trays and everyone of the servers, EVERYONE, except me smoked. We
would have our meetings out on the deck and I would stay far away as it
stank to high heaven. Every Fri. & Sat. night I would be humping huge trays
and see them sitting out there taking thier breaks. That pissed me off that
they got a break and there I was busting my hump. So, I started going out
to take a break and I would sit away from them. Nicodemon already had me
and I didn't have a clue. Avoid sticky situations. After almost four
years, I remember sitting closer and saying exhale on me. *sigh* A couple
weeks later, let me have a puff. Smokers are just not so supportive or
understanding and it still amazes me how easily I forgot just how damn hard
I worked to get and stay smober. It was the thing I was proudest of and I
just was reading Jefs post on Junkie Thinking. I was in it deep. I
convinced myself that I would only smoke at the yacht club or if we were out
on the town, cocktail time. I did that for a good while. At that point the
addiction had its grip on me, I became full blown and I have been fighting
this battle for a little over 3 years now.
I know that I will always have to remember that I am a full blown addict and
that anything I try to tell myself otherwise is utter bullshit. I cannot
have one. I have to avoid ppl and places that are threats to my quit.
There is nothing that will hurt me more to stay quit than smoking will do to
me. And quitting can be painful, but it passes, and it is not nearly as
painful as lung cancer, emphysema, COPD, or just being a slave to an
insidious addiction.
Man, I could go on.....
I guess I just forgot how hard I fought, and that is all my nicodemon
needed. He was right there the whole time waiting for me. He always will
be.
I never, ever would have believed I would find a cigarette attractive back
then. But, I did. I reached for the cigarette, before reaching out for
this group.
There have times were I have believed that I may never find a quit again,
but I am not willing to settle for that.
Not this girl, not this time.
Hope this helps.
Best wishes,
Susan

Hi, Tim. I quit because of a very bad cough, too. I was tired of
sleeping in the guest room. The cough was gone in three days (much to
my surprise), but I figured I'd gone through three sorta uncomfortable
smoke free days (not nicotine free because I was on the patch) and I
didn't want to waste them by starting up smoking again. Having quit
many times before I wasn't going to fall for the idea of having an
"occasional" cigarette. Like you, I found out that the "occasional"
cigarette doesn't stay "occasional".
So, welcome back. You have a good start there.
Stay strong, stay stubborn, stay committed. And, remember, there's no
such thing as just one (doncha know it!)

Well done Susan!
My wife hasn't been a smoker since her pregnancies and our youngest is ten
now. I haven't smoked in the house since there were babies in it and there
was some worry about cot death in smokers houses.
It sounds like you live in a more extreme climate. What is Febrezing?

Curious mind really needing to know.

Okay I can remember really. I had no problem with work, stress, drinking,
socialising, driving, I didn't need to smoke there. When I was a young man I
used to love sailing small boats, and most of those iconic moments of
happiness and contentment have been for me afloat on the sea with a fine
breeze in the sails, a hand on the tiller and always smoking a cigarette.
Last year I was helping a friend to deliver a small yacht and on my watch
during the night I 'borrowed' a couple of cigarettes while he was asleep. I
told myself it was alright to smoke as long as I was not on the land but
after a while I found I had to buy a packet if I was sailing at the weekend
and then I had to finish them off at work on a Monday and then I didn't want
to stop smoking on Tuesday... you know how it goes.

Anyway, that has been my problem every time I have given up. Maybe I am a
bit of a sensualist but for me the difficulty is that in my mind tobacco is
pleasure, and tobacco enhances all the other pleasures.

An excellent post and a great lesson. Never get complaisant.

Febreze is a spray that unstinks things. I had a really bad house
fire and used so much of that stuff trying to get the smoke smell out
that I can't smell it now without some really awful memories.

Welcome back to AS3, Tim! Since you have been here before you
probably know many of our tools, but it is always useful to wade
through the FAQs as they are loaded with helpful information on
getting and staying smober. I, too, had a really great quit going but
blew it after 3+ years and then smoked for over 6 more years before I
finally got it together, got some Chantix, and came back here. The
Chantix took the edge off of getting smober but this group totally
makes all the difference. Do read and post here as much as you can.
Learn that there is NO romance in smoking and what you thought was
romance was BS that Big Tobacco has been cramming down your throat.
Being smober is really the best gift you can give yourself and realize
that 2008 can be your first smober year!
