Default The Journey is about to begin

I feel I should begin this post with "My name is Sandie, I'm a
smokeaholic". It's true, I am, however that is all about to cease.
After smoking a packet (25) of cigarettes a day for the past 40 years,
I've had enough. It is now costing me $AU80 a week, that's over $4000
a year!

After having tried and failed in giving up many times in the past, I
went to my GP yesterday and he prescribed Champix for me. I took the
first one today and my give-up date is January 25. The following day I
am going down to our beach place for 2 weeks on my own and occupy
myself with painting, reading and just general vegging out.

I found this group yesterday and after reading some of the posts I
think if I'd found it when I've tried to give up in the past, your
support may have seen me through. My husband is, and always has been,
a non-smoker and while he is very supportive of my attempts to give-
up, he doesn't really realise how much of a crutch and an addiction
smoking is. I feel I have failed him so many times, but he's never
berated me for it, just suggests I try again later. Well later is now
and this time I'm fuckingwell going to do it!

I'm with you there Bill, good luck back to you. Talking about nice
dreams, wouldn't it be nice if we could just sleep through, say the
first six months, and wake up non-addicted! That's my idea of rehab.
Cheers

Hi Sandie, no doubt you will be getting welcome messages from other
members, so I'd like to
jump in first. To welcome you ofcourse but mainly because your message is
almost identic to the one that I sent
about six months ago.
I would have liked to go away at the start of my quit but I couldn't,
however, I was lucky to
be free to do what/when/if I wanted.
See my meter at the bottom, this is the first time in my life that I can
boast about a quit. And I feel positive, healthier, stronger,
my husband and son are delighted. I must add that the help received from the
members of this Group has had great impact on my success.
So, my best wishes for your *journey about to begin*, and look forward to
hearing on how you are doing.

Sandie and Bill,
You are both off to a great start, you have your plan, you have your
meds, and you have a good support group. There is every reason in the
world that you will succeed. You both have a lot of guts for deciding
to take back the remote control from this addiction! And you have a
lot of good stuff to look forward to. I'm not even a month into it and
my lungs no longer ache, my reflux is gone, blood pressure is normal,
and I feel so proud of myself.

Please keep us all posted. This group really cares about you.

Welcome, Sandie. Are you online at your beach place?

Stick around here and read and post as often as necessary. We're here
to do whatever we can to help you succeed.

Welcome, Sandie!!! You've found the right place for support (and a
bit of fun, too). It sounds like you have a good plan - the 2 week

Welcome to AS3, Sandie! As Lynn already suggested, do go to AS3's
unofficial website at www.quitbuddies.org and read our FAQs there.
They are full of useful information on getting and staying smober and
the site also has links to several other useful online sites. I used
Chantix last February when I got smober. I found it helped to make
the quit the easiest I have ever undertaken and the urge to smoke has
totally disappeared. I found reading and posting here as much as I
can really has helped me to stay focused on why I am quit and helps me
keep my resolve to stay this way. I also have used the website that
Chantix has for quitters and I do suggest you use it as well. The
more you put into your quit the easier the results can be, I strongly
believe.

Hi BessieBee
No, I'm not online at the beach place. One of its (many) attractions
is the lack of phone coverage, no signal for mobile phones either. I'm
sure I'll be OK for that 2 weeks as there is nowhere I can buy
cigarettes and I won't have a car. I'll check back in here when I
return, about 10 Feb.

Deal. My birthday is Feb. 9. I don't want or expect gifts, but from
you I'd like a report that your two weeks were spent luxuriating in
whatever makes you happy during your solitude and displaying a quit
meter with 2 weeks down. (Even if the meter is in your head. I have
no clue where you'll find a Mac compatible one. Sorry....)

Onward and upward!

Consider it done, one report coming up on Feb 10 or thereabouts. Don't
know about the meter in my head though, these days it seems not much
gets retained there, I'm very good with lists though!

Hi Sandie and welcome to the friendliest group you could have found!
It sounds like you have a good plan in place and a good real life
support system in your husband; definitely use this group to post and
read whenever you have a craving! Good luck! Stephanie

Sandie! Just a thought for something constructive to do about your
quit while you are at the beach and away from us could be to read a
copy of Allan Carr's Easy Way to Quit Smoking or some of the other
books on the subject. While it is not the same as reading our
'esteemed wisdom' <G> and interacting with us, it still can give you
something to think on and re-inforce your quit. I've done probably 5
or 6 serious quits over the years and have come to realize that there
is no 'one way' to get smober and so I do like a Chinese menu and take
some ideas from column A and others from column B, etc. Regardless,
enjoy your stay at the beach, listen to the ocean and know that
smobriety is your new pathway to freedom!

What a great introductory post! I don't think there is anything to add
to it except: Welcome to AS3! Welcome to a better life. And I don't
mean the washed out phrase. I really mean better life. You'll see :-)

Sandie,

Congrats on your decision to quit. Yes you can do it! I found that this
group was a tremendous resource for me in my quit. Listen to the folks
here. Read everything (well... you can ignore the spam. Most of all,
do not pick up. Do not smoke. Not even one.

ConcordPhil
I have not smoked in 6M 2W 3h 37m. That's 198 days! I have not used any
nicotine at all since 9/03/2007.
