| | | Knew this was coming. I just need to dump a little right now. Just after I quit, I went to the
docs for the first time in several years. She gave me a full physical
and told me that my BP was high. She also said my lungs sounded a little
raspy. So she gave me a P/A to get blood work and a chest x-ray. I went
for the blood work a couple weeks ago and I went for the chest x-ray
today. I'll find out the verdict on September 2 when I go back to docs.
I'm pretty sure my cholesterol will be up there and she already put me
on a very low dose of BP medicine. She thinks if I continue to exercise
that I won't need the BP meds after a while. Naturally, I'm worried
about the x-ray results. I smoked from age 13 to age 46 with a couple
years off for my first quit. That's 30 years plus. You don't smoke for
30 years and not have any damage. Just doesn't happen. I like to think
that since I can do the rowing machine for 30 - 45 minutes straight,
that it can't be all that bad. Can it? I know. I need to just wait until
9/2 and leave the diagnosis to the doc but I can't help being fearful.

There is no point dwelling on it, honey, you can't change the results with
worry, and worrying never helped anything. Sounds easy, doesn't it? I know
how hard it is, believe you me. But it is what it is, and 2 weeks of
worrying won't help your BP. I have the same issues, and my chest x-ray
and EKG came back fine. So will yours. Positive thoughts only, my friend,
positive thoughts.

If you can do what you do now without any problems, and you're happy
with that, then I wouldn't worry too much about the x-ray. It'll come
back fine.
BP can likely be managed thru exercise, and the cholesterol thru diet.
Is your doc on holidays or something? Normally it's less then a week's
wait for bloodwork and an x-ray (my wife gets the results for her INR
-- blood thinner meds -- within a few hours).
Don't fret! It'll be fine!
Cheers!

I'm sure the doc gets the results pretty much right away. From what I've
heard, my doc is really really good about getting people in who need to
be seen right away. But if it isn't urgent, then you have to wait a
while. But it does seem like kind of a long time, doesn't it? Well, so
far I'm comfortable with her. But if that changes, I can always switch
docs... well, that is if I can find one in my plan that's accepting new
patients. Welcome to health care in the US of A.

Phil! There are millions of people in their 80' and even 90's who
pretty much smoked all their life and got away with it.
Don't get me wrong, it sure did not help their lungs look pretty but
it did not kill them.
So please do not worry. Worrying kills, maybe not as many people as
smoking does, but still.
Keep yourself busy and focused away from the results. The result will
be the same whether you worry about it or not.
I know how you feel. I felt the same way, but much worse, and am now
preaching to you
But still, no worries bud, you still have many boobs to lay your eyes
upon

And you probably already know this, but the HBP is directly related to
smoking. I had HBP and it almost completely went away when I quit. Now
I just need not to feed myself a gallon of coffee daily and everything

If you can do that rowing machine thing it seems to me (nondoctor)
that your lungs must be in good shape.
Now, I have a dear friend who just isn't very bright sometimes. She'd
had a PAP test a few years back and called for the results. When she
was given the verdict she started to cry. Hey, it was negative. As
far as she knew negative = bad. I had to explain things to her.

Phil - This will probably piss off people, but I have terrific
cholesterol count cause I still drink. I quit smoking 12/04; I told my
husband I would quit drinking soon, but I couldn't quit smoking &
drinking at the same time. I lied. I haven't quit drinking. My blood
pressure still isn't okay, but my cholesterol is "better than normal".
I don't know for a fact that liquor contributes to the "good"
cholesterol, but I think it does. (I'm not advocating drinking for
health reasons - you know that's ridiculous.) Just an observation.

No need to worry yourself sick while watching the calendar creep by.
Pick up the phone and call your doc's office. Tell them you're
concerned (very concerned) about the results of your recent x-rays and
want reassurance that there is nothing on the x-rays that raises
immediate concern. OR, find out who the physician is that read your
x-rays (won't be your primary doc) and tell them you want the results.
That doctor (a radiologist) will be billing you for his/her service so
you are entitled to their info.
The nice thing about x-rays is that the results are immediate. If
there is something suspicious your doctor probably won't wait until
your appointment to call you. Sometimes no news is good news.
As a hospital patient with frequent flyer miles I've learned that the
vast majority of doctors like having an inquisitive, informed patient.
Let your doctors know you're not willing to wait patiently for test
results that can be given to you long before you're expected back in
their office.
Ask questions. Demand answers. Doctors are providing a service for
which they will bill you. They put their pants on one leg at a time
and are no more human than you.
I hope everything turns out OK for you, but understand your concern.
Fucking cigarettes.

You said it, you smoked for 30 years, it takes a little longer that a month
to fix that. It will take time to heal. If you can do 30 - 45 minutes on a
rowing machine I think you're doing pretty well. I asked to have a chest
x-ray done a month after I quit, the doctor said something to the effect
that it's radioactive you know. I thought, I've exposed myself to
carcinogenic materials for 30 years what's a little exposure to x-rays going
to hurt.

I quit on May 30th, and on June 20th it was 123/77. While I was a
smoker it was commonly in the 150/100 range and worse.
I was only given BP meds once, in February, but that was under panick
attack, BP was over 200.

Thanks for sharing that Tiho. When I went to the docs just after I quit,
it was 130 over 90. When I went back 2 weeks later, it was 132 over 98.
Go figure... it went up 2 weeks after my quit. Probably just an anomaly
but good to keep an eye on it.

Thanks Greg. Ironic about the radioactive thing. And you're right. I
should be fine so I'm not really worried. But I think I'll hang on to

Just so you know you're not alone Phil, I started smoking around 16.
Quit twice for total of 2 years and I'm now 61. I think that works
out to about 43 years of smoking. Oh...and I'm on 4 different meds
for high blood pressure. The human body is a marvel. When we stop
abusing it, it does a great job of healing. I think many of us in
the early stages of our quits have this nagging thought that there's
a possibility we didn't quit soon enough. That you had a chest x-ray
ordered doesn't help relieve that nagging thought but it also doesn't
mean anything other than the doc wants to rule out complications.
Bronchitis also makes lungs sound raspy. Seems to me that if the Doc
thought it was urgent, would have sent you to the express X-ray line.
Isn't it great to have a place where we can dump our frustrations,
