Default A little nervous

As several of you know, I've had a lil setback. Although I have
strengthened resolve today, I'm a little worried about tonight.

First, I'm leaving work shortly to have a belated Father's Day dinner
with my father, a heavy smoker, and my brother, a reformed quitter
like me. I would rather not be around smokers right now! Plus, I don't
want to smell like it. Although obviously that's not my primary worry.

And after that, I'm driving back downtown to attend a party for a work
friend of mine. It's her birthday and I have promised to get her home
safely. Not only does she smoke, I fear that many of those at the
party will be too -- this group is rife with "social smokers" who
don't smoke at work but for some reason puff it up at parties.

Quick pep talk, folks!

Ashley

Steve faced this every day, with almost everyone he worked with. He allowed
himself to be around smokers and be okay with it cos he know he didn't want
to smoke. If I were you hon, I would print out the following and every time
you think of smoking, read it, and imagine me kicking yer butt, k?

This is stolen from a post by Keven:

#1F- Don't FLIRT with smoking. Don't do anything physical that allows you to
get closer to puffing-away again! You've heard the things that people will
do because they are "strong enough" to resist any urges, only to be
surprised at how fast they fall!

#2F- Don't FANTACIZE with smoking. Your thinking about what it would be like
to have a cigarette again is just plain dangerous. You did it for years, why
would you think it has changed?

#3F- Don't FORGET why you quit. Always remember what a dangerous and filthy
habit smoking is.

You are not a smoker, honey, and its okay to feel smug and a little
sanctimonious looking at all those stinky people chained to their demon!
You can do it!! And I expect a report later tonight, missy!!

Sarah - sending you strength. Take my number and call me before you smoke.
Collect if you need to, okay!

Good response Sarah - good question Ashley. All you have to do not to
smoke, is not to smoke. Just don't do it. Pretty simple, right?
Addicts want to find excuses to fail - don't fall for that.

You might want to let them everybody at the dinner of what you are trying to
accomplish, and ask them politely, even your dad, not to smoke in front of
you, or excuse yourself while THEY smoke. I don't see anything wrong with
that. In the early stages, I think you should avoid situations where
smoking is "available" to you. Once you pass that stage, believe me, you
will tolerate it, easily.

I'm sure your well into a nice smoke free weekend by now Sarah
pointed out Keven's rules these are spot on. Richard spoke about a
mantra recently something short and sweet which presses your buttons
"smoking is not an option"..." I don't want one I want them all"

I wish I could find the post about "just one" where it ends with the
sniffing of cocaine from claudia schiffers cleavage.

I digress.. this addiction has a habit of sneaking up on you when you
are at your lowest and your highest. Years ago in one of my many quits
I had just done really well at work. I had worked really well and the
outcome was fantastic.......My reaction to this was to smoke.. busted
a 6 month quit.... what a knobhead. That nicodemon is one sneaky
motherfucker for sure.

Have a great weekend
Regards Chris

Ashley! I expect that your evening is well over now, but the issue of
being around smoking people is something that us smober folks do have
to deal with. I see people smoking every time I go outside in the
street since you can't smoke in most buildings here in NYC.
Additionally, my boyfriend, Ric, smokes and does do it around me. I
just had to realize that because THEY are smoking is no reason for me
to do so. I am smober and proud that I have said no to sickerettes
for as long as I have and continue to do so.

Ugh. I wasn't *completely* wonderful but today is, indeed, another
day. The best part of my quit is, it's MINE -- I can start it over
whenever I want. I've had a rough week as far as quitting is concerned
and I really just want to put it behind me and jump back up on this
wagon.

And I feel like crap (sore throat, headache, sinus issues) from being
around all that smoke last night so that's a pretty powerful reminder
of why I don't want to do this anymore.

The funniest part was the fact that I had to go home and take a shower
at 3 a.m. because I stunk of smoke so bad, after being at Dad's and a
bar, that I could not sleep. I didn't even want to pollute my bed like
that.

Onward and upward! Day 1 of my new smober life!

Ashley

Yeah, my man smokes around me too!! But it doesn't really bother me (except
the smell, and the fact that his health is suffering, I'm sure) I just can't
get my head around the fact that I don't even want a cigarette and feel sorry
for the puffers that are hangin' on to the nicodemon. I think once you
realise that you can't even have ONE - the quit starts to make sense. Junkie
thinking indeed. I've finally nailed this bastard. I'VE FUCKED OFF THE
NICODEMON. Yay, I'm bullet-proof.
(And maybe a little short for my weight B-)
