I worked for Fortune 500's for forty years.
Here is the secret.
They drag a net through a bad neighborhood and call it "Recruiting".
I have been through spinoffs, IPO's, takeovers, acquisitions,
closures, and mergers.
I left my career in disgust last year, and today when I hear the word
"Manager", "Director", etc, I spit on the floor.
"Overpaid stupid White Trash" is one of the first phrases that come to
mind, followed by "People who pimp other people's efforts and
accomplishments".
Someone once asked how the Corporate Food Chain worked.
"It's Biology: Scum Floats".
We had a Group VP who could not understand simple communications.
My suggestion was to take a DIN 25 connector, and drive it into the
rear of his skull with a hammer, in hopes that perhaps a direct upload
would work.
I worked for a VP who had a PhD. He wandered away from a meeting, and
in exasperation, people asked me how I communicated with him at all.
"A lovely evening on the dark side of the Moon....Up a perfect fifth.
Now: Play the Five Tones."
We had a corporate house counsel who essentially hid under a
meter-high pile of papers. His nickname was "Attorney Turtle".
I finally lost it, towards the end of my career, and began disrupting
meetings. Strangely enough, I actually began to be treated better!!??!
Maybe they thought I was becoming Management Material!!??!!
We had another who would, realizing that he did nothing, call
pointless time-wasting meetings so he could grandstand. After his
Grade-School performance, he would then ask, "Is there anything anyone
wants to talk about?"
I flung my feet up on the table, leaned back, and said, "I want to
talk about Where Babies Come From".
At one meeting, of an R&D group that was being shut down and
disbanded, the mood was one of depressing despair. The longer the
meeting continued, the worse it got. One person, a high-strung skinny
individual, went to the mens' room, and upon washing his hands, turned
on the water too hard. The sink splashed him all down the front of
his pants, and he appeared, al pathetic and upset.
I jumped to my feet, pointed at him, and shouted, "..For the Lord
SMOTE Onan, for casting his seed upon the ground!"
The meeting was over, collapsing in laughter and confusion.
Some people get to look back on their careers with pride and
satisfaction. I do look back with pride on certain technical
accomplishments, but generally I consider it as a bad mistake and a
wasted life, and am disgusted and repulsed that I tolerated these
managers at all.
I run my own business now, something that I should have done decades
ago. I work for a prick, as always, but at least, not such a stupid
one. |

Everything has to do with smoking if you're quitting.
Thinking cigarettes were my only tool for dealing with that exact kind
of thing kept me smoking.
But anyway, I've watched perfectly sharp people turn into idiots the
further up the totem pole they went.
I don't know why that happens.
Maybe ties cut off circulation to the brain?
Meetings kill brain cells?
Anyway, I loved "Proper introduction and OF speech."
I'm inspired.
If my feet, ankles and knees ever quit aching, I'm gonna run.........

Steve,
I think you have encountered one more proof of the Peter Principlpe.
From Wikipedia:
"The Peter Principle is a theory originated by Dr. Laurence J. Peter
which states that employees within a hierarchical organization advance
to their highest level of competence, are then promoted to a level where
they are incompetent, and then stay in that position. "
It ain't just talk... it's true!

usually the dumber ups, even in the demolition/salvage industry this
occurs, where most people haven't got their grade 8, which, BTW, in and
of itself is NOT a big deal, not in canuckland anyways. $25 to start for

I quit smoking November 18/2006.
I have been quit for 10M+.

I often wonder what happens when a person gets moving on up the ladder.
It seems to me that they lose sight of the job in hand and get full of
their own importance. Get of lot of this sort of stuff in my work Steve
I have been there long enough now to try to let them know they are not
getting away with it. I have a few retorts always on hand to chuck at
our glorious leaders
"Lions lead by donkeys"
"Rudderless ship adrift on a sea of despair"
and my all time favorite "you are just a figurehead, someone to blame
when one of us gets hurt"
Recently their was a big debate about rank markings, I suggested a
silver plated cock and bollocks attached to a headband.....unfortunately
it was not taken up They can't take a joke either.

...And they live in terror of being found out and discovered.
What could be scarier than having a job that pays you enough so you
CANNOT quit, and knowing in your heart that you are a no-talent,
incompetent asshole piece of trash, who has to say to his wife, "Of
course you can buy the Jaguar".
The rule at our corporate headquarters was "Never make a mistake"..so
of course, we were run by terrified people who would NEVER make a
decision, or do much of anything. They would sit, paralyzed by fear,
and when at a loss for anything else to do, would call a pointless
meeting, so they could all pretend to be doing something.
Since the meeting was pointless, there was no risk of accomplishing
anything, or reaching a conclusion that would expose them to risk.
Hence, the conference rooms were always booked. It gave the
appearance of being busy, and all the attendees knew in their hearts
they were unproductive overpaid parasites.
ALL they had in their jobs was their own importance, since in reality
they had nothing of substance to contribute.
I hope all their ARM's reset, so they can huddle in the street where I
can urinate on them. Gushingly.

Yes, yes, my wife made me a T-Shirt that says "Rocket Scientist", but
the term is sarcastic.
