Default Lot of traffic! (long)

I was at my house for some four hours today so missed my lunchbut I got
down to the dining room tonight for a meal, such as it was )bacon,
scrambled eggs and a pancake thing. And a mug of rather ghastly (real)
coffee. Give me Nescafe any day....
Now, d/loading the newsgroups, I find a huge amount of messages that I
will never be able to wholly read.
My hip had a lot of work to do, but held up pretty well. It's only 2.5
weeks since my argument with the kitchen floor so I'm quite pleased
with it.

And now for news of the latest upheaval -
Well, I'm getting out of this place at the end of the month.
After two weeks of it, I've had to conclude they have no experience of
having a sightless person in here. I asked one or three of the staff and
it appears I am the first.
So nobody has any experience or training in dealing with someone like
me.
(*is* there another like me?)
To sum up: I am getting food (not all that brilliant actually)
apartment cleaning, laundry.
I had all these already running perfectly at the Riverbend house,
A housekeeper, Patricia, and her sister were coming in to do laundry and cleaning, and
I can cook after a fashion,
and I did laundry as well during the week. Also had that wonderful
dishwasher!
So, the things I already had organized were here, but not the things I
did not have at Riverbend. Namely transport, shopping, paperwork like
Mrs McIver did so well before she moved to Hawaii.
Here, I am unable to even get assistance with tracking down stuff that was
missing after the move, and time after time I asked someone to
ask someone in management to come up and discuss the things I was needing
and not getting. Time and time again, no one appeared. Yesterday I
was in the big entrance hall with the physiotherapy woman, and wee
bumped into the manager chap, Gilbert Something. I asked him who I should
discuss my frustrating problems with and he said Oh he was the chap who
dealt with problems and he would call up to my place in five minutes.
And guess what, he simply failed to appear all day.
Today I got a neighbor, Mrs Post to run me over to the old house to collect the
things that were missing and presumably still over there. In fact,
almost none of them were except the drinks glasses which the mover had
evidently forgotten.
On getting back I phoned down and asked Paula, the Marketing manager
or some such, to pop up for a word with Mrs Post, who had said
she would like to try to get my frustration and dissatisfaction across
to these people. After along wait, the manageress finally arrived and I
put it to her that this place was just not suited for someone like me.
So as I have paid the month's rent for June, I'll get my money's worth
and try to get moved back at the end of the month.
I don't want to use the one that moved me here because A: I had
pointed out to their representative who had called a week or so before
the moving date, the furniture I was taking and the stuff I was leaving
there. I assumed he was noting all this down for the movers to work
from. So when the 2 movers arrived just over three weeks ago, they
immediately started taking everything out to the van. The guy who'd
called to assess the job hadn't given them any word that only some stuff
was to be moved. marvelous.
and B: an envelope holding about 80 - 100 dollars, household cash,
which I'd concealed in a drawer, was just not there when the stuff was
brought in here. I can't prove it was the movers of course, but they're
the most likely suspects.

I phoned Patricia this afternoon and she is quite happy to resume her
post. She was a little unhappy when I announced I was to move out.
I've been reflecting over these last couple of weeks, I had a pretty
organized setup at Riverbend but here, it's anything but. One of the
worst things is the cleaning staff moving things and not telling me and
not putting them back more or less in the same place. This drives me nuts,
as if a thing is moved only 2 feet away, it ceases to exist for me.
Again, it's obvious they have never dealt with the unsightly here.
Also they have an unsettling habit of walking in with a brief knock on
the door. I like my privacy, living alone for decades you get that way.
They also seem to think that if you're over 60, you are automatically
senile. It may be their other inmates are a bit woolly minded and not
too sharp, I don't know. But I doubt anyone could describe me as
being in that unfortunate state. So when they talk to me in that irritating
manner - as if they are talking to a half-wit - I get extremely ill
tempered.

Well, if you've stayed the course through this rant, thank you for your
endurance and attention!
And if you know a good furniture removal firm in this area, let me
know ....
Roll on the end of June - I shall not be sorry to pull out of here.

Oh Ian, someone would talk to you as a half-wit at his peril! I do
hope you sell tickets if you ever decide to bitch-slap the poor fool
who'd try to take you on!
Moving is a bearcat and I am sorry you have to do it twice in as many
months, but it sounds like you'll be happier back at the old
homestead. Keep on the mend! Stephanie

My dear Ian! Your sense of humor in the face of this failed experiment is
quite uplifting to read, really. Thank you for keeping us up to date.
Having been a caregiver for my mother for many years before her death, I am
intimately acquainted with the downside of our less qualified facilities for
assistance, such as the bit about talking to you like you're a moron.

We all have to go through these decisions eventually (short of being hit by
a bus). Thank you for being such an entertaining role model for doing so
gracefully. Yes, I said GRACEFULLY, again. And you're CHARMING, I repeat,
CHARMING, as well. You can't deny it. It's obvious to even the most casual
observer.

Good luck with the next move. Keep us posted.

Your friend and admirer,

I'm just glad you're able to move back.
I had a bad feeling to start with, but kept my mouth shut.
The feeling got worse when I heard you didn't have central heat and
air.
Good luck moving forward.

intention of getting out of here and how I felt the place wasn't aimed
at people like me, independent types. She told me 85 per cent of the
inmates here suffer from
"some form of dementia". Nothing of this is mentioned in the
brochure extolling the benefits and virtues of the place....
But it confirms my suspicion that I am a fish out of water here and
will be better placed back in my house.

Ta, I think I'm making the right move - this place is no doubt ideal
for some but not for me.
Talking of air conditioning, when I went to the house yesterday, the unit
had been running at a low setting, maybe 67 F, and as you probably
know this causes the unit to freeze up. So the temperature in there was
over 80 F! I switched it off and ten minutes later tried it again and
this time it came through cool. I left it at about 72 F so it
shouldn't freeze up again.

Life would be insupportable if one had no sense of humor. I've met a
few in real life and in n/groups, and had to wonder, How on earth do
these poor souls manage.

As I mentioned elsewhere, I've lerned that 85 per cent of theinmates
here suffer from some form of dementia.
It may get me one day, but not yeT!

Another little outburst!
This 'retirement apartment place is just unbelievable.
Monday, I asked the lady driver who takes people to where they need
to go, to run me to my house and it appeared that today at 3 pm would
be the first possible time and day.
At the same time she looked at my XM radio, which worked perfectly in
the house, but failed to make a sound here. I miss it very much; it was
on almost all day in the house's lounge.
So we agreed it would have to be taken in to a dealer. Not knowing the
local shops I asked her if she knew a suitable one and she said she
would find out by Friday.
Naturally I assumed we would be taking the radio to a shop, leaving it
there if it can be fixed, possibly picking it up on the return journey
from my house.
So, in the last half hour, I find that A, she has not attempted to
locate a radio shop, and B had been instructed by Paula, the manageress,
to take me only to my
house, nowhere else. This is worse than useless.
No getting round it, I was very ill-advised in choosing the
Waterford-at-Fort Worth retirement outfit.

Groan ....

It don't show on the monitor! I rarely mention it on on n/groups, unless
it's relevant and in context.
And if anyone is wondering, how the devil does he read the screen, I
have for around 12 years, had a screen reader/voice synthesizer; it
doesn't actually read the text on the screen - I've run it with no
monitor attached. Then it speaks through a couple of speakers, in a
fairly good imitation of a human voice.
It's been invaluable, and especially in reading printed text on paper
which I've scanned into a file, bank statements, bills, etc. .

Ian, you really have rolled with all these punches quite well. I know
you'll be much happier to be out of that place. You've done

Yeah, like I said elsewhere, I'm well used to taking the odd rough
patch and getting through it one way or another. We Scotsmen are pretty
hardy - and obstinate - types you know!
I must admit I did suffer an unexpected desperate need for a cigarette
this evening when I poured out a glass of Scotch and sat down (painfully
as my hip has been quite sore today). But there is simply no way to buy
a pack here so I just picked up my now empty Nicotrol dummy cigarette and
fiddled with it!
Then got to listening to some Seventies pop music and forgot the need
to draw in smoke.
I'll beat that stupid nicotine fiend - he's got no chance against a
Scotsman!

Ian! As others here have already said, you tried out the place, but
it simply was not right for your needs. I do think it was remiss of
the administration there to accept your application knowing that your
needs were vastly different from most of the others. I do hope you
find the move back to your old digs is not a terrible event and that
your return makes life easier for you.

As to your smobriety, you are doing amazingly well and I enjoy reading
your posts a lot!

They're simply not fit to be running a place like this, IMO. I could
cite a list of faults, stupidities, lack of organization, and
inconsistent patterns of day to day operations. This may not bother the
inmates, especially the ones who are no longer fully aware, but to
someone like me, it is simply unbearable.

I was well organized there, but lacked occasional transportation to
places like the doctor's, liquor store, bank, etc. I'd ben led to
believe this would be available here, but yesterday's incredible
attitude by the woman driver shows me different.
I've done a mass e-mail to the residents of the development my house is in
asking if anyone can provide transport occasionally, gasoline paid for
and a remuneration but so far no phone calls so I'm not hopeful.
However, at least I will have Patricia, the housekeeper, back and I will
be able to make decent meals again. The thing they served up for
the evening meal, chicken and a roast potato, was horrible. The potato
was tasteless, and the chicken was so thought I was forced to
surreptitiously disgorge it onto my napkin, it was just unchewable.
I didn't go for the midday meal today but might risk the evening meal.
I'd have thought for 2100 dollars a month, they'd have been serving
somewhat better prepared and larger meals.

Had a bit of an urge to smoke today after making an instant coffee, but as
there are none in here, I just waited it out.

asylum.
