Hi all,
I encourage you to look at Physicians and Nurses Against Tobacco, at
www.unholysmoke.org ... Briefly stated we are a group of healthcare
professionals who are trying to address the moral and ethical aspects
of addiction, specifically
nicotine addiction. Nicotine introduces
the brain to the unfortunate reality that exogenous substances can be
more powerful than the brain's own mood chemicals. In many this
leads to dependence on nicotine and in some it starts the search for
more powerful levels of euphoria. The 6 million annual tobacco-
related deaths testify to the power of nicotine addiction.
We are frustrated over the lack of action on the part of political,
religious and educational figures whose job it is to protect and
advocate for the common good.
Our current project consists of assembling a petition of our
colleagues and supporters directed to the current Pope, Benedict XVI.
Our petition will inform him of the 130 million estimated tobacco
deaths during the 29 year reign of his predecessor Pope John Paul II
and we will ask him to join us in condemning the production,
distribution, sale and use of tobacco. We will also ask him, as a
Head of State, and as an example to others, to declare the Vatican the
first tobacco-free country! This petition will be published in The
Boston Globe on the occasion of the Pope's visit to the U.S. in April
2008.
