Default New quitter to be

Hello everyone. My name is Randy and I'm a smoker. :-(

I started on Chantix Monday and plan to quit after my last smoke Sunday night.
I have tried several times in the past using patches, lozenges or gum and have
never made it more than 2 months. This will be the first time in 38 years that
I will be completely nicotine free.

I have already felt the effects from the Chantix as I don't get the usual buzz.
I chew nicotine gum during the day (weekdays) from 7AM to 4:30PM instead of
smoking and the chantix is having the same effect with that as the cigarettes.
I felt a little irritable/anxious the first three days, but feel better today.

I was in this group a couple of years ago and found it very helpful,
unfortunately I fell off the wagon and didn't come back. This time I will be
successful!

The biggest problem I will have is my partner will still be smoking as He is
not ready to quit yet. He will when the time is right but I won't nag him.

I had my teeth cleaned this morning so maybe they will whiten up some, but
probably not as I am a very heavy tea drinker and that stains my teeth
terribly, but as least my breath and clothes will smell better and won't cough
all the time.

I have had a couple of weird dreams since starting the Chantix but I'm looking
forward to some really wierd ones. What can I say, I'm weird! Dennis, my
partner, would confirm that. Haven't had any other side effects.

I'm looking forward to joining you all and become a non-smoker for good! :-)

Randy

Hi Randy! And welcome back to AS3. (That's one cute kitten, by the
way. I'm a kitten fan. I have two that are 10 and 11 and unfortunately
not kittens but still cute.)

A lot of people I know -- and a lot of people on here -- have been
really successful using Chantix, and I believe you will be too.

I'm sorry to hear that your partner is still smoking, BUT know that
you can still successfully quit. A lot of AS3ers are in the same
position and I'm sure you'll be hearing from them.

For now, though, look forward to your quitting becoming its own reward
-- it does, I've found, once the hard part is largely behind you. And
don't forget, we're here to help. Feel free to vent and check in as
often as needed.

Hugs,

Ashley

Hi Ashley.

Thanks for the welcome. The kitten, almost full grown now, is 11 months old
now. He is a little love bug. He is such a sweet little guy. I'm not too
worried about Dennis still smoking, except of course for his health. I can deal
with it. I may take you up on the "vent" offer, but, I'm not much of a
complainer. I will check in daily and read.

Hugs back,
Randy

That's very important - don't nag. Unfortunately, this will probably
make your quit more difficult. Be strong and be stubborn.

I'm a serious tea drinker, too, and my teeth will never be pearly
white unless they aren't really mine.

Oh, good! We need more weird people here! I'm old. One nice thing
about being old is that one is no longer considered "weird". I
consider myself to be eccentric which has a much nicer ring to it. )

Good for you Randy, welcome back to AS3. It will be a little tougher to quit
with a smoker around but it can be done. Wishing you the will to succeed.

Randy,,,, I wasn't able to quit on day 8 per the literature.
But, I kept taking the Chantix as prescribed.
Here's my first post here describing how I finally quit.
Hope it works for you too.

Welcome back to AS3, Randy. You might want to refresh and charge up
your commitment to smobriety by looking through the FAQs which are at
www.quitbuddies.org. At present we are using the chatroom Marvin set
up at http://www.johnphoto.com/chat.html. If you feel like chatting,
its best to post here that you are gonna do it and then go to chat.
Someone usuallys shows up pretty quick.

I, too, used Chantix this time around and finished my 90 days of the
meds back in Mid-May. I totally found it helped make the quit a non-
issue and I had very few days of either wall climbing or generally
grumpyness as I had had with other quits. There are several of us who
have used it and overalll we all seem to find it really made a
difference.

You know the rest. Read & Post and come here as much as you can. My
partner also smokes and while he usually refrains around me it is an
annoyance. Hang Tuff & Don't Puff once you have started your quit. I
look forward to reading about it this weekend!

Hi Randy, welcome to AS3. I'm happy to read that you won't be a
smoker for much longer.

I quit almost 3 years ago, but my husband still smokes. What helped
me at the very beginning was to make sure absolutely everything
connected to my smoking (my brand of smokes, my ashtrays, lighters,
matches, etc) were tossed. Not just in the trash, but also out of the
house. I even tossed (sob!) my beloved Zippo lighter. I wanted to
make absolutely sure everything was gone. My husband removed his
smokes from the house, but it was helpful that I never liked his
brand, always tasted nasty to me.

I hope Dennis is giving you support even if he continues to smoke. It
still pisses my husband off a bit that I won't allow him to smoke in
my car, but he deals with it. I hope Dennis is willing to sit in
non-smoking areas if that's an option in your area (shouldn't be an
option, IMHO, everywhere should be smoke free :-)

Anyway, I'm rambling, but I wanted you to know I'm one of the quitters
around here with a partner that can't free himself from the stink
sticks and has managed to maintain an almost 3 year quit.

Welcome!

Welcome Randy!!

Focus on the positives -- no stink, pink lungs, sense of Pride and
Accomplishment and best of all the fundamental recognition that you are
worth it.

But remember it IS and addiction and the execs of Big Tobacco are
profitting from it. There is no special blend of tobacco ... it's a lie
.... it's paper coated in a chemical soup that drives the hook deeper.

As far as your partner's smoking ... my cat, Molly, shows her
displeasure with things by shitting on the floor. I find it very
effective. :-D

Wishing luck and great determination.

You CAN do it!

Cheers!

OMG, Marv! I never would have thought of that! Perhaps I should rip
off Molly's technique whenever my husband announces he's going
outside. The biggest hurdle for me will be the timing..... I'm quite
sure Molly is as talented as my George who can shit, puke and shed at
will. I, on the other hand.....

Your cat shits on the floor too? Wow. My cat shits on the floor (next
to the litter box, so she gets SOME credit) when things don't go her
way. Trouble is, things are NEVER going her way. If they were, I'd be
home 24/7, no friends, no job, no nothing, and would have untold hours
to pet her while she eats, a favorite pastime.

Thanks Marvin. I think I'll pass on Molly's technique, I'd end up having to
cleaning it up!

Thanks Mike. That's an interesting screen name. Is there a story behind it?
I'll check out the quitbuddies website and possibly even the chat room.

Thanks BessieBee. Dennis always gives his support for anything I do, he's a
good man. I commend your resolve and hope to accomplish the same. I'm sure the
Chantix will help alot, then I can praise it to Dennis, giving him suttle hints.

Thanks David. I'm glad you were able to stop. I guess it really doesn't matter
whether it takes 1 week or 3, as long as it happens. Congratulations on the
quit.

Hey Randy. My handle is actually the name I go by 24/7 anymore. I
live in the Flatiron District and the Flatiron Building is my
favourite building in NYC. Take a look at my pix
http://picasaweb.google.com/FlatironMikeNYC and you'll get a better
idea of what I mean. I have a 17 year old puss, Samweis, who is a
master at sleeping and shitting on the floor. Seems to be a major
issue here at the moment. And my lover, Ric, also smokes. So far, my
6 months smobriety hasn't rubbed off on him but I sense he's antsier
about smoking the longer I'm smober...

Have fun. Be well. Enjoy the upcoming adventure as smobriety is
really about regaining your self-respect and sense of self!

FlatironMike
Six months, one week, six days, 15 hours, 29 minutes and 21 seconds.
3892 cigarettes not smoked, saving $1,167.62. Life saved: 1 week, 6
days, 12 hours, 20 minutes.

Welcome back Randy!!!!!!!!

It sounds as though you have the motivation and the desire to quit. I
cannot wait to see your meter start ticking over your smober time.

Remember to read and post as much as you are able to...it really does help.

I wish you strength.
